@wow__then It's very difficult to do good Arya art. You have to make it believable for her to be mistaken for a boy, give her a long face, and still be pretty. You did a great job with this! Kudos!

@SandyofCthulhu It's compelling because it combines two great aspects of an archetypal hero: cunning and bravery. You have to be smart to think of making a bladed suit of armor. You have to be brave to follow through with the plan.

I love oddball ways of killing "unkillable" monsters from legend. A serpent dragon from England crushed you with its coils, so a knight made a suit with disk-like blades all around it, so when it constricted him, it cut itself into segments. The Stoorworm from Scotland rejoined its parts together when chopped up, so couldn't be killed with a blade. They thrust a pole of burning pitch down its throat and roasted it from the inside out. So often in our movies, the "unkillable" monster isn't killed by some clever means, but just by shooting it EVEN MORE until it is weighed down by all the lead I guess or being shot by a really big explosion. And when I say "clever means" I'm not talking about a gimmicky trick kill that one-shots the monsters. Making a spiked suit and being swallowed, making a blade suit and getting constricted, and thrusting a pole of burning pitch down the horror's venomous throat are all hard tasks, but cool. I think our screenwriters' imaginations are weak today.

A dragon terrorised the Dalry area. A local blacksmith killed the beast, he made a spiked suit of armour and when the dragon swallowed him, it was ripped to pieces inside, out from: 'Folklore of Scotland: Faerie Folk and Folk Horror' by Stephen G. Rae art: Johan Egerkrans

@VK_HM I'm sometimes hesitant to read very foundational books like this because it feels overly trope-y. I know it isn't fair because it's the one thay established those tropes but alas. Are the Elric books worth the read?

@zbogus77 tyrion as in tyrion lannister? i would have imagined that hes sorta "too new" as a character to be significantly influential to other works. i dont really know anything about fantasy literature though, what comes to mind as being influenced by him in your opinion?

@SandyofCthulhu These meme also doesn't work because Martin never said that. He said he wished Gandalf the White was a more distinct personality than the Gray, which is totally a fair point. There are plenty of resurrected characters in ASOIAF and I think Martin does the change very well.

Gandalf's resurrection was one of the very few times that a resurrection worked in fiction. It worked in Narnia because it was a reflection of Christ's. I hated it when they resurrected Superman after his death, because I knew for a fact they wouldn't let him die so it was a stupid and moronic attempt to play on our emotions from the get-go. Let's not talk about Palpatine's.

@TheFarRightSide @FrenlyOfficer The political stuff is kino and this is part of the problem. It is so compelling that it has to be the new focus. ASOIAF would not be as beloved as it is if it were purely about the fight with the Others and the WOTFK was merely a distraction.

@FrenlyOfficer In my genuine opinion he got overly invested in the historical fiction element and it drifted so far away from the actual fantasy before he realized it that he just got to a point where he can't bring it back around in any coherent way. The Others are in like two scenes.

The Others in A Song of Ice and Fire are allegorical for global warming. Everyone is bored of global warming now including GRRM which is why he can’t write about it.

@FrenlyOfficer For someone who is "equal parts white and black," it's strange that Daemon does nothing morally righteous with the possible exception of killing a character way more memorable and likeable than he.

@FrenlyOfficer GRRM's opinion on Daemon Targaryen is the greatest support of The Death of the Author in recent memory. He is as charismatic as a petulant child who stamps and whines when he doesn't get his way and is one of the least heroic characters in Fire and Blood.

"Aegon could have easily ended the marriage by allowing Naerys to join the Faith of the Seven as she wanted, and then married any other woman of his choosing. Why he never did this is cause of much speculation among the maesters. The answer most likely was simple cruelty."

@FrenlyOfficer Yeah, but the dothraki are a horse-mounted force. The mongols are a rough approximate and never had any problems dealing with castle-bound forces sallying out. Ambushes are easy if they stray too far.

This misunderstands the purpose of castles. You can leave them and attack and then come back for safety. Requires a much larger force to keep the men in a castle from doing damage.
𝐅𝐄𝐍✦@CatstackCvltvre

@FrenlyOfficer @Carcrashwhite Castles don't really mean much if you control basically ever other part of the land including all the parts that produce food. Starve em out just by existing.

@TheFarRightSide @MiddleearthMixr I definitely think GRRM was planning on the series happening over a longer period than it ended up being, which accounts for why a lot of the characters are unbelievably young. But Dany's dragons are also magic prophecy babies so we can let it slide.
