You’ve just picked up your sleeping pills at the pharmacy when ping! - you receive a message on your phone. It’s the police, sending you a notice about your driver’s license being canceled.
This scenario has been sparking widespread discussion on Chinese social media after a Xiamen resident purchased Zopiclone and, shortly after, received a text message from the Huli District police instructing them to come in and cancel their license (see image), allegedly without ever consenting to the sharing of this sensitive information.
Traffic police have since responded that it was more of a "risk reminder" than an actual cancellation notice, and that a hospital medical certificate would set the record straight. Either way, others who recently bought certain medications say they’ve received similar messages, and "risk reminder" or not, they'll still have to go in to confirm they're fit to drive.
The text message points to a real-time, automated data pipeline that links medical insurance drug purchase records to local traffic authority databases. That prospect is now raising serious concerns (the topic trended on Zhihu), with many questioning how local traffic police can actually legally access citizens’ medication records. There are also worries about misidentification: for example, when people pick up medication (for epilepsy, heart disease, etc) on behalf of others, that data might then end up being tied to their own identity and they'll face the bureaucratic hassle that comes with it.
Next time you're in Xiamen and pick up Viagra for that heart condition (ahem), you might think twice - the system cannot distinguish between why someone bought a drug, or who they bought it for, and you might just need to explain that you don't actually need that medicine for your cardiovascular condition.... 😅
