@WallStreetApes @HuneeBadger68 Another trick is ambiguous pricing on the shelf I.e. it rings higher because the bogo as only for some certain size or flavor and they figure you’ll miss it at the register or just let it go.

We aren’t just getting shorted in product weight on food This is a 100 pack of screws from Home Depot “I just counted them — I dumped 'em out. 73, there's 73 screws in here” Missing 1 or 2 is an error. Missing 27% of the product is fraud Americans are being robbed blind

SWOs generally get fired for incompetence or toxic leadership. Aviators generally get fired for Liberty incidences or not keeping their pants up. That’s a broad generalization but reasonably accurate. Thoughts, @TexSandlin and @WMcluskey?
josh@josh200396

@RSE_VB Do we have any numbers for how many SWO’s vs Aviators have been fired?

駆逐艦と言っても満載排水量9千トンとかある艦がこんなんなるのか… 昔の2千トンくらいの駆逐艦とかどんな事になってたんだ しかし流石に10万トンのスーパーキャリアーは安定してるなあ

“Don’t give up the ship” literally means “Don’t give up the ship”. This is one of my absolute favorite books from WW2 written by the Navy’s top salvage master. The number of warships lost because captains abandoned way too early in that war is unbelievable.

@goatmaster89 @OldGnarlyGoat OBA all the way for me. Was glad to see y’all finally spring for SCBA for more than just the torpedos. I’ve breathed so much of that hot recycled air while tempting heat exhaustion in an FFE in a sweltering DC locker….

@OldGnarlyGoat One of the benefits of starting a career as a SWO and then becoming an EDO is you get to fix some of the stuff that frustrated you at sea. I began in the OBA era and then in the DDG program office transitioned the class off OBAs and on to SCBAs.

Time for a quick sea story. When I was Damage Control Assistant on USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) - whose machine shop looks the one pictured below on Mitscher - there was a young unrated Fireman who wanted to strike into the Machinery Repairman rating. We would give him time to work in the machine shop under the direction of our MR1 (Machinery Repairman First Class). One day he was in there by himself and got bored. So, he decided to use his newfound skills with all those cool machines to cut open an OBA canister to see what was inside. (These canisters produced breathable oxygen to be used by fire fighters while fighting fires.) For those that know some basic chemistry, the next event will not surprise you. The machine shop was soon engulfed in flames and the duty fire squad (we called them the flying squad) was dispatched to put out the fire. I then had an uncomfortable discussion with my CO about the young men in my division. The young fireman, after getting off restriction, found a different rate to strike into.

A U.S. Sailor operates a lathe in the machine shop aboard USS Mitscher (DDG 57) sailing in the Middle East. Hundreds of crew members aboard U.S. Navy ships at sea contribute to mission readiness day in and day out.

The most decorated living US Merchant Mariner is probably Captain Hugh Stephens 102 years old His first trip was on a 100 ship convoy crossing the Atlantic in World War 2 As they approached the Straits of Gibraltar, the convoy broke up and 30 American ships entered the Mediterranean. The waters were filled with unseen enemies. German U-boats moved silently under the waters like sharks. The convoy made their way toward Crete. Here they were met with a heavy Luftwaffe presence. The planes strafed the decks of the ships first with incendiary rounds to light the hatch tarps on fire, and then conducted a second round of strafing with regular rounds. Hugh zigzagged across the deck as the bullets tore into the deck around him. He was assisting the Navy gunners as a loader, and his bravery, as well as that of all the others aboard, ensured that the ship’s defenses were able to hold off the enemy attack. PATRIOT

National Explosive Ordnance Day is observed to honor US Armed Forces members who risk their lives disarming bombs. This year, EOD Day is May 2. I'll post info about EOD all week. Acting Secretary of the Navy, Hung Cao, is an EOD man. Please join me in congratulating Secretary Cao on his extraordinary career and his official appointment.

It's not like me to insist on getting in the last word. I usually leave that to others. However, serious doubt arose in my mind about the goings-on at Chernobyl. I studied the accident through KGB post-accident analysis files translated to English. But we all know intelligence agencies are prone to spin the truth. So here's what we think we know - x.com/i/grok/share/0…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DEPARTMENT OF WAR
April 28, 2026 The Department of War today authorized the World War Eleven Campaign Medal for all personnel who survived the latest global mess. “After the usual committees and one very lost intern, we’re proud to present this bronze globe-on-fire medal with its red-black-blue ribbon,” said Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Thaddeus “Buzz” Killington. “Wear it proudly… or at least ironically.” Eligibility: Served in theater, didn’t surrender to a Roomba, and can still spell “Ypres.” A bronze star device goes to anyone who lived through more than one Tuesday. Uniform update: Tactical velcro now authorized. Complaining remains punishable. The Department of War – Still Here, Still Counting
