AUSSOM troops and Somali National Armed Forces (@SNAForce) in Sector 1 today neutralised insurgent hideouts in Buulo Abdala and Madulo, Lower Shabelle, in a targeted operation. Coordinated ground and air support struck militant positions, eliminated several insurgents and recovered weapons and equipment, weakening their operational capacity. AUSSOM Sector 1 Commander Brig. Gen. Jackson Kayanja commended communities in Mubarak, Marere and Darusalam for their support while local leader Shuaib Osman from Awadhglee praised the cooperation. The operation, led by Col. Owinyi Akena, underscores the effectiveness of integrated operations in countering insurgent threats. #AUSSOMInTheSectors

I strongly condemn the harassment and suppression directed at members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, who were travelling to their constituencies in Puntland, Somalia, during their parliamentary recess. Furthermore, I denounce the abduction of the Advisor to the President of Puntland on Social Affairs, Mr Ahmed Abdi Hurre. These deplorable actions pose a grave threat to public trust, national unity, and the country’s state-building process. Such acts are not a solution to political disagreements; instead, they only serve to fuel further division. I call upon the government and security agencies to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Ahmed Abdi Hurre, and to cease all actions aimed at suppressing the legitimate representation of members of Parliament.

I strongly condemn the attack carried out last night against Members of Parliament at the Airport Hotel. It is deeply regrettable that representatives elected by their constituents were subjected to repression and force, with police reportedly acting under the orders of the President. I extend my full solidarity to the Honourable Members who were targeted and singled out in violation of the laws of the country. A Member of Parliament should not face threats, assault, or intimidation simply for carrying out their constitutional duties. This is not only an attack against individuals, but an assault on democracy and on the noble traditions for which the Somali people have long been known. The actions taken by President Hassan Sheikh clearly display the hallmarks of dictatorship. A President cannot dictate to Members of Parliament, nor can he silence those with differing views in order to push through a Constitution that has not been agreed upon and is not accepted by the Federal Member States. A legitimate constitutional process must be inclusive, consultative, and reflective of a genuine national consensus — not one imposed through force and intimidation, as occurred at the Airport Hotel. Although President Hassan may rely on the support of the Speaker of Parliament to manufacture an artificial quorum that does not truly exist, such tactics cannot create real legitimacy. Politics built on manipulation and maneuvering cannot replace a true national agreement, as clearly reflected in the 2012 Constitution. Let it be clear: A Constitution that is imposed without consensus and without the approval of the Federal Member States will not work. Using constitutional reform as a trap to extend a term in office undermines public trust and risks destabilizing the country politically. Democracy cannot survive where fear replaces dialogue and mutual compromise. The correct path forward is consultation, compromise, and adherence to the rule of law not repression and force. As stated in today’s statement issued by Jubbaland, Somalia is at a dangerous crossroads brought about by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud; any negative consequences that arise from his actions will be his responsibility. “Is this truly how a united Somali people were meant to end?”

The average Somali speaks at least three languages, and Somalis speak virtually every language in the world. They also have deep exposure to, and understanding of, cultures across the globe. If the government were to tap into this wealth of experience, it could quickly begin to change the distorted image that Western media and some NGOs have projected about the country in a very short time.
