Thailand, US Expand Crackdown with “SHIELD” System, Eye Tier 1 Upgrade Thailand is stepping up cooperation with the United States to crack down on call center scams and human trafficking, as part of a national priority to combat transnational crime, the government said. Authorities have already seized assets worth over 20 billion baht from suspects linked to scam networks, with investigations expanding into groups using Thailand as a base for money laundering. A major scam operation along the Thai–Cambodian border has also been dismantled, rescuing more than 10,000 people of various nationalities who had been trafficked and forced into online fraud schemes, including romance and investment scams. Talks between Thai and US agencies in Washington, D.C., in late April focused on boosting intelligence-sharing and joint operations against cross-border crime. US losses from such scams exceeded $6 billion last year. The government said intensified enforcement could help lift Thailand from Tier 2 to Tier 1 in global human trafficking rankings, strengthening investor confidence and the country’s international standing. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said those traveling with Spirit Airlines should not show up at the airport, but instead try to rebook with another carrier that's assisting flyers amid Spirit's immediate shutdown on Saturday. "United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest are capping their ticket prices for Spirit customers," Duffy said. "It's going to vary between the airlines. You have to go to their websites to take advantage of these special offers. It is normally going to be about $200 for a one-way ticket." Spirit customers who are rebooking will need to provide, at a minimum, their Spirit confirmation number and proof of payment.
