Texas Power Grid: What You Need to Know Texas's energy grid has two parts: ⚡ Bulk: Moves electricity long distances across Texas 🏠 Local: Delivers power to your home or business Why care? Investing in transmission means more reliable, affordable power for Texans everywhere. A stronger grid = peace of mind, lower bills, and a brighter Texas. #txlege #txenergy #transmission

Most people only notice the power grid when it stops working. But the grid is a critical part of our daily lives, even when it’s functioning as expected. Much of America’s transmission system was built decades ago, primarily in the 1950s and 60s. These systems were originally designed to last about 50 years. Now, many parts of the grid are overdue for upgrades to ensure reliable and affordable electricity for the future. Modernizing our grid is essential to keep electricity affordable, reliable, and ready for future needs. #txlege #txenergy #transmission

When transmission falls behind demand, Texans pay the price through higher bills, longer outages, and slower economic growth. A strong grid is essential to keeping the state competitive and resilient.

Texas just got a D- in power grid planning. At a time when demand is skyrocketing, a 2025 report says the state is still thinking short-term. 54,000+ miles of transmission lines. 1,200+ generation units. And still largely cut off from the rest of the country during emergencies. The issue isn’t capacity. It’s planning. Read more bit.ly/3NJrfAW #txlege #txenergy #transmission

Transmission lines are typically funded by traditional utilities, Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), and merchant transmission developers. RTOs operate the grid across regions and fund projects based on regional needs. When RTOs don’t contribute, the financial burden falls more heavily on individual utilities and their customers. Understanding who funds transmission projects helps Texans see what drives their energy costs. 💡Want to dive deeper? The U.S. Department of Justice warned Texas lawmakers: “Competition is a core organizing principle of the American economy… restricting transmission to local incumbents can harm consumers… consumers may have higher expenses.” — DOJ Antitrust Division (re: SB 1938) ROFR laws allow incumbent transmission companies to build, own, and operate new electric transmission lines, bypassing the competitive bidding process. These state-level laws are intended to streamline development but end up increasing costs for ratepayers. Less Competition = Higher Transmission Rates. Texans deserve better. #energy #publicpolicy #texas #transmission

How is transmission planned? The U.S. is divided into nearly a dozen transmission planning regions, each responsible for guiding long-term strategy and identifying specific projects to keep electricity flowing where it’s needed most. Planning is generally more coordinated within Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), whereas in other regions, traditional utilities focus primarily on their own systems. Understanding how transmission is planned gives Texans insight into how grid decisions are made and how reliable power is delivered to homes and businesses. 💡Want to dive deeper? What are courts saying about Right of First Refusal (ROFR) laws? “This provision is quintessentially crony capitalism. This rent-seeking protectionism legislation is anti-competitive.” — Iowa Supreme Court ROFR laws allow incumbent transmission companies to build, own, and operate new electric transmission lines, bypassing the competitive bidding process. These state-level laws are intended to streamline development but end up increasing costs for ratepayers. Less competition means higher costs. Texans deserve better. #energy #txlege #txenergy #transmission #ROFR
