The left understood that in institutions you will always encounter people who aren't leftists, and you must undertake a long war of position to outflank them so your agenda becomes the agenda of the institution.
Twitter purists sperg out because they think stating the most extreme position makes you somehow morally superior and therefore any contact with the impure is personal destruction. Surprise surprise, projecting pure ideological statements onto the internet accomplishes nothing.
