@KerryHolmekb Great, pragmatic words but how does solve anything? Trump will not take heed, so how can the world be protected from someone like Trump.

BREAKING: 🇺🇸 Former U.S. President, Barack Obama: “We cannot launch military operations to get out of an ideological or technological problem. History has taught us that conflicts in the Middle East are easy to start, but almost impossible to end in an orderly way. We must recognize that peace is not built on rubble, but on a regional architecture that provides stability. We must choose between difficult and persistent diplomacy, or a perpetual regional war that has no winners, only victims.”

@SenatorSlotkin Realistically, however, what institutional or individual scope realistically exist to force Trump from realistically carrying out his threat?

President Trump's latest threats on Truth Social, if carried out, would violate the law of armed conflict as laid out in the Geneva Conventions and the DoD Law of War Manual. It is both irresponsible and wrong to indiscriminately kill civilians in Iran and destroy civilian infrastructure like bridges and power plants — particularly when the President said this war was to aid the Iranian people. On top of that, it’s our service members who are put in legal and mortal danger. And when the smoke clears, it will be our service members -- not President Trump or Secretary Hegseth -- who could have to live with the consequences. President Trump has walked us into another complicated war in the Middle East. His decisions are making us less safe abroad, raising prices and costing American blood and treasure. He must negotiate a way to end this war, open the Strait of Hormuz, and bring our warriors home.

One month after starting the war in Iran, this is the statement of the President of the United States on Easter Sunday. These are the ravings of a dangerous and mentally unbalanced individual. Congress has got to act NOW. End this war.

The abuse and attacks endured by Alex Crawford @AlexCrawfordSky for simply pointing out the legal protections afforded to journalists in war are pathetic. It’s evidence of how desperate the defenders of unlawful military operations by Israel have become.

Threatening war crimes and mocking Islam isn't a sign of strength, it's a sign of weakness. The PM should rule out UK forces and airfields being used for any attacks on Iranian civilian infrastructure. What more will it take for Starmer to call off the Royal Visit Trump craves?

@JonFDanilowicz This will be very hard to achieve certainly in the short term given the dire state of civil society and their complete absence in most parts of BD outside Dhaka. An area to focus for those who wants to see a prosperous BD.

@Talha_Jamil Members of Parliament need to feel that they are accountable to their constituents and not just the party leadership. Democracy requires more than simply holding elections every five years. This is a test for civil society.

More voices calling for the ratification of critical human rights ordinances without amendment. It is disappointing to see efforts by the BNP majority in Parliament to dilute these important efforts to strengthen protection of human rights in Bangladesh. #neveragain

@JonFDanilowicz I do not disagree with the sentiment but one needs to be realistic and in short term India will not yield. What is needed is a proof of concept and BD needs to find willing nations to demonstrate the concept and its benefit, they try and bring SAARC into it

@Talha_Jamil I'm not ready to give up on SAARC as an institution. But, in the short term, the spirit of SAARC can help inspire initiatives at the sub-governmental level. Regional cooperation can't be held hostage to the politics involving two of the member states.

It is encouraging to see more voices speaking out in support of the Bangladesh Government’s efforts to revitalize SAARC. South Asia remains the least integrated region in the world, to the detriment of its people. New thinking is needed to change the status quo.
Counterpoint@CounterpointBD

With SAARC long stalled, Bangladesh is testing whether regional cooperation can be revived through pragmatic, non-political engagement amid shifting geopolitical currents. Read more: [link in the comment] #Bangladesh #SAARC #SouthAsia #RegionalCooperation #Geopolitics #Diplomacy

“Controversial” ? Seriously? How about: “immoral”, “unethical”; contrary to all democratic norms”? How about: “in breach of international law”? How about “heinous”, “stomach-turning”, “irredeemably revealing of a sick society in need of help”?
Financial Times@FT

Israel’s parliament has passed a controversial bill that seeks to impose the death penalty on Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis in acts of terror, but not on Jewish Israelis who kill Palestinians in similar circumstances. ft.trib.al/iabissb

I’ve had loads of abuse for this, predictably, and plenty of people have accused me of supporting Hezbollah. But no one seems keen to explain why targetting the Lebanese medics who came to help the 3 TV journos was justified.
John Simpson@JohnSimpsonNews

The Geneva Convention says it’s a war crime to target journalists, even if they work for an enemy organisation. It’s also a war crime to target medical workers. After the killing of 3 Lebanese TV journos last week, several medics coming to help them were killed as well.
