#OnThisDay 66 years ago, apartheid police used live ammunition on peaceful, PAC protesters in #Sharpeville and #Langa, 69 people in Sharpeville and 2 people in Langa, and injuring over 200 people combined. On this Human Rights Day, we remember the Sharpeville Massacre — a turning point that illuminated the brutal cost of oppression and the urgent demand for freedom, dignity, and justice for all. #OliverTambo spoke of active action in the face of injustice, and the reality of that moment showed how state violence aimed to quell the cry for rights. The passage of time does not soften the pain, but it strengthens our resolve to safeguard human rights, advance equality, and honor those who stood up for justice. Today, we recommit to building a future where the tragedies of the past propel us toward ensuring enduring human rights for all.

We are thrilled to be at Makerere University for the 3rd annual gathering of O.R. Tambo Africa Research Chairs Initiative. This initiative truly embodies the spirit of O.R. -- his passion for education, African knowledge. sovereignty, and cooperation across African nations. As the Foundation's CEO, Natasha Allie said in her opening remarks, "We are united by a conviction that the legacy of O.R. Tambo is not a monument to be admired, but a movement to be advanced. It lives wherever African scholars push the boundaries of knowledge, and wherever research is used to uplift communities and strengthen our shared humanity." #TamboMonth #TamboRemembered #PanAfricanUnity #GlobalSolidarity #TamboMonth2025

“O.R. deserves to be remembered. He is the father of the struggle, the father of democracy in this country... He didn't want it. But I think we owe it to his legacy to at least honour him more than we are doing so that future generations do not forget O.R., and so that it never happens again, that, post-revolution, history consumes its heroes.” — Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Humble. Principled. Unyielding. This #TamboMonth2025, we honour the man who held a movement together — and inspired a continent. #PanAfricanUnity #GlobalSolidarity #TamboRemembered #TamboMonth

Oliver Tambo understood that freedom at home required solidarity abroad. Sanctions were not just political — they were moral. #TamboMonth2025

#DidYouKnow Oliver Tambo was close friends with African leaders, especially Julius Nyerere in Tanzania, Kenneth Kaunda in Zambia, Sam Nujoma in Namibia, and Samora Machel in Mozambique. Africa was the first and most important source of support for the South African liberation movement, and these frontline states risked their safety and security by being allies of the liberation movement. #TamboRemembered #TamboMonth2025 #PanAfricanUnity #GlobalSolidarity
