President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today welcomed a high-level delegation from the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), led by Secretary General Job Muniaro, during a courtesy visit that set a purposeful tone ahead of Workers’ Day.
The President reaffirmed the central role of workers in Namibia’s development path, noting that engagement with labour remains both a priority and a responsibility. As the country approaches 1 May, she expressed her readiness to stand alongside workers on a day that honours their enduring contribution to the economy.
Signalling a progressive shift in approach, President Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that Workers’ Day must transcend tradition to become a shared national undertaking. Drawing on a prior Cabinet decision, she called for a more collaborative, tripartite approach to the organisation of Workers’ Day, bringing together workers, employers, and government in a unified effort to honour the contribution of labour to the national economy.
She envisioned a celebration that reflects collective ownership, mutual respect, and visible partnership across sectors, where this tripartite collaboration is not only symbolic, but actively demonstrated through the participation of employers alongside their workforce, under the stewardship of government, signalling a cohesive national commitment to labour and productivity.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Mr Muniaro conveyed appreciation for the President’s leadership and accessibility, reaffirming NUNW’s commitment to inclusive preparations. He underscored the central role of workers in driving national development and described the upcoming Workers’ Day as a pivotal moment for unity, shared responsibility, and renewed purpose, while safeguarding workers’ rights and dignity.
He further encouraged leaders across both the public and private sectors to actively engage, positioning this year’s commemoration as a moment of hope for the nation.
Mr Muniaro also highlighted the importance of strengthening workplace discipline and professionalism, while calling on employers to invest meaningfully in training, skills transfer, and capacity building to enhance productivity and support sustainable wage growth. He stressed that investment in human capital remains essential for value addition, job creation, and economic sovereignty.
The engagement reflected a shared commitment to elevating Workers’ Day into a unifying national occasion that honours labour while reinforcing collaboration across all sectors of the economy.
