Mary Phagan-Kean
Mary Phagan-Kean@PhaganKean·
False. The ADL's characterization of the 1913 Leo Frank trial as having been marred by Jew-hatred is a detestable lie. Anti-Defamation League also misrepresents the circumstances and motivations behind Leo Frank's 1915 extrajudicial hanging by leading men of Georgia's civic, legal, and political establishment. Leo Frank's Pardon Is a Profound Miscarriage of Justice The ADL (@ADL) and Jonathan Greenblatt (@JGreenblattADL) have done great harm to my family, Americans, and specifically to the people of Georgia by promoting the falsehood that religious bigotry drove Leo Frank's conviction for the strangulation-murder of 13-year-old Mary Phagan. This claim is false, and the ADL's own sources confirm it. ADL's "Hang the Jew" Hoax Debunked by Steve Oney (@steveoneywriter): The ADL tweet contains several assertions that collapse under scrutiny when measured against the historical record. The trial was not "marred by antisemitism." The ADL's own Leo Frank expert, Steve Oney, told the Jewish Journal that the "hang the Jew" courtroom chanting claim is not substantiated by the evidence.[1] Debunked by Leo Frank: Leo Frank himself told a Jewish newspaper publisher that antisemitism was "absolutely not the reason" for his conviction.[2] Debunked by Atlanta Constitution, 1913 The defense's own mistrial motion cited crowd giving plaudits for the prosecutor, not antisemitic chanting.[3] None of the three Atlanta newspapers (AC, AJ & AG) covering the 25-day trial reported antisemitic crowd behavior during the proceedings.[4] ADL Weaponizing Antisemitism Hoaxes and Distorting History with Antigentile Blood Libels The ADL has published this unsupported claim across several different pages on its website over a span of more than two decades, with the wording varying from version to version, the details escalating over time, and no primary source citation ever provided.[5] Leo Frank Was Never Absolved or Exculpated of the 1913 Mary Phagan Murder A pardon was historically something granted to a living person, because the recipient held the right to accept or reject it. A dead man can neither accept nor reject anything, which raises a fundamental question about the legal validity of the 1986 posthumous pardon itself. Setting this foundational problem aside, the pardon did not officially exonerate Leo Frank. The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles explicitly stated that the symbolic pardon was granted "without attempting to address the question of guilt or innocence."[6] Leo Frank remains officially guilty under Georgia law to this day. The pardon was issued solely because the state failed to protect Frank in custody and failed to bring those who abducted him to justice. Framing the pardon as vindication, exculpation or absolution is a misrepresentation that the ADL's own source documents contradict. Leo Frank's Guilt Was Proven to a Near-Mathematical Certainty The coroner's inquest voted 7 to 0 against Frank. The grand jury, which included four Jewish members, voted 21 to 0 to indict him for the murder of Mary Phagan on May 24, 1913. The trial jury convicted 12 to 0 after 25 days of testimony. Judge Leonard Roan denied the motion for a new trial. The Georgia Supreme Court upheld the conviction. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that Frank received every right guaranteed to him under the Constitution. Every level of the American judicial system sustained the verdict. The 1986 pardon left the guilty verdict undisturbed. [7] Say Her Name, ADL: Mary Anne Phagan (1899-1913) The ADL's tweet mentions Leo Frank by name and adds the Hebrew honorific "z'l" (of blessed memory). It does not mention Mary Phagan by name. A 13-year-old girl was raped and strangled in a factory by her employer, Atlanta B'nai B'rith President Leo Frank and the ADL cannot bring itself to acknowledge her. The tweet is not a memorial. It is an act of erasure. I am Asking the ADL directly: Say Her Name! What is Mary Phagan's name? Why does she not merit a blessing? The ADL has spent over a century elevating the memory of a convicted child-killer while systematically burying the child he killed. Challenging the "Hate-Filled Mob" Framing of the Vigilance Committee The men who carried out the extrajudicial hanging called themselves the Vigilance Committee. The name "Knights of Mary Phagan," which appears widely in secondary sources, was not their actual name. It was a mistake that got swept into the historical record, likely originating from New York Times coverage.[8] The Vigilance Committee included a former governor, two mayors, a judge, a state legislator, and prominent attorneys and businessmen. Their identities were known locally. No one was prosecuted. Calling them a "hate-filled mob" reduces a deliberate, organized act by the civic leadership of Atlanta and Marietta to a spontaneous eruption of religious bigotry. The ADL uses this framing because the alternative, that Georgia's leading citizens believed Leo Frank was guilty and acted on that conviction after the commutation by Georgia Governor John Slaton, is a reality they cannot accommodate. Governor Slaton's Conflict of Interest The ADL never mentions that the Georgia governor who commuted Frank's death sentence to life in prison, John M. Slaton, was a partner in the law firm that represented and defended Leo Frank at his trial and through his state appeals. Slaton joined the firm of Luther Rosser in May 1913, after Rosser had already been retained to defend Frank and had publicly taken part in his case.[9] This was a conflict of interest so brazen that it provoked the public outrage the ADL now attributes to religious bigotry and Jew-hatred. Mary Phagan-Kean Responds to the ADL's Distortions The ADL has consistently warped the facts of the Leo Frank case to serve its institutional mythology. It has misrepresented the pardon as exoneration on X by not clarifying it, promoted the unsupported courtroom chanting claim on its website, omitted the victim's name from its public statements, and suppressed Governor Slaton's conflict of interest from every account it publishes. In the words of: I am Mary Phagan-Kean, great-niece and namesake of Mary Phagan, as quoted in the Marietta Daily Journal in 2019, now restated in 2026: "The Phagan family has no objection to anyone expressing their opinions about the Frank case, but we do insist that organizations and personal campaigns not distort the truth and facts to use this case for their own political purposes. ... Driven by the need to exonerate a Jewish leader, they intend to convict an innocent African-American man. They spread fabrications, propagandize falsehoods, distort the facts and change headlines of original newspapers to promote the hoax of not guilty. The real miscarriage of justice is that in this time of the #MeToo movement, they seek to override a duly convicted murderer-pedophile's conviction."[10] No Widespread Antisemitism in Georgia in the Years Surrounding the Leo Frank Case, 1913-1915 The Jewish population of Georgia more than doubled between 1907 and 1918, the period straddling the Leo Frank case. It has grown exponentially since. The interfaith marriage rate in Georgia is high. Jewish communities are deeply assimilated into Southern culture. If antisemitism was truly rampant and pervasive enough to drive a wrongful murder conviction, why did Jews continue moving to Georgia in record numbers in the aftermath of Leo Frank's extrajudicial hanging? Why do Jews continue to intermarry with the people who supposedly despise them? Would haters of Jews go out of their way to marry Jews and raise families with them? The accusation that anti-Jewish hatred was widespread at the time and drove Leo Frank's murder conviction is a detestable distortion by those who weaponize the Leo Frank case to defame the people of Georgia and falsify their history under the pretense of moral superiority and moral courage. Historical Memory: A Blessing for Whom? The ADL closes its tweet with "May his memory be a blessing." A blessing to whom? Not to the family of Mary Phagan, whose murdered child has been written out of the ADL's narrative for over a century. Not to the people of Georgia, who have been branded as antisemitic bigots for convicting a man the evidence showed was guilty. Not to Jim Conley, the Black man the ADL's allies have spent a century trying to saddle with sole blame for a crime. Not to the child victims of predatory employers whose cases are undermined every time an organization with the ADL's reach canonizes a convicted child-killer as a holy martyr of antisemitism. Leo Frank's "memory" as constructed by the ADL is not a blessing. It is a grotesque weapon, and it has been wielded against the American people and my family for more than a hundred years. The original trial records, contemporaneous newspaper coverage, and primary source documents cited in this response are publicly accessible online. I post, repost and quote tweet about this information regularly in my X timeline. The ADL has done great harm to my family with its generational exaggerations, falsifications, obfuscations, omissions and outright lies about the Leo Frank case. Today marks 40 years since Leo Frank z"l was posthumously pardoned - a significant day in ADL history. Frank was lynched by a hate-filled mob in Georgia after being unjustly convicted of murder in a trial marred by antisemitism. May his memory be a blessing.

Well I suppose I learned last summer that life is short, definitely too short for holding grudges.  So when @GamebredFighter said he wanted to sit down and break bread of course I took him up on it.  Today he came to Wisconsin, sat down had some dinner and chatted it up.  Turns out we have more in common than different 👊👊👊  Felt great to bury the hatchet and make a new friend.  Life is too short to hold grudges, bury hatchets and move one with your life.  So glad Jorge was able to come to Wisconsin today.
