Good evening. Wal-Mart installed digital price tags, and it wasn’t so they could lower prices dynamically. Have a great day.

@JamieHalse They need to get to Kazakhstan - huge potential and strong growth as a farming / beef producer. Guess there's nothing stopping the Kazakhs from creating their own Halter.

Want to learn how to not make $80m? It's simple. Have the opportunity to co-invest NZ$25k in Halter in 2016 at $750k pre-money valuation, and not seize it. Halter just raised money at a NZ$3.3bn valuation from Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, and Blackbird Ventures. Congratulations to the Icehouse Ventures team on backing such a huge winner from the earliest stage, and to the Halter team for the incredible job in building a wonderful business and innovating to bring advanced tech to an area where New Zealand has key strengths - agriculture, and dairy farming in particular. Icehouse Ventures often offers investors in its funds co-investment opportunities in funding rounds it participates in. Over the years I have reviewed four or five of these seriously, and invested in two. One of these paid out 3x, the other 20x+, I passed on the rest and for 2/3 that was a good decision. So all in, a pretty great result. Sadly, I passed on Halter. This is the one I should have understood best, due to spending a lot of my childhood school holidays on my uncle's dairy farm in Northland, NZ. Ironically, had I never stepped foot on a dairy farm, nor had family living the farming life, I may not have passed on it! Dairy farmers are a sceptical lot, and the highest tech system on the average NZ farm a decade ago was the farmer's iPhone (or more likely Android phone - farmers are very cost conscious). Halter is changing this rapidly. My $80m estimate is likely an exaggeration. I am sure the $750k valuation reflects a very different equity structure to the NZ$3.3bn one, with initial investors experiencing dilution along the way. But, whatever the true number is, it is large! It is some consolation that I have a small exposure via an investment in Icehouse Ventures' seed fund, but a direct investment would have been much nicer. For any wholesale investors interested in the NZ VC scene, I recommend getting in touch with Icehouse Ventures, and follow Robbie Paul. Icehouse has a fantastic network of NZ founders, and get great deal access. The vast majority of the companies they invest in have global potential - NZ is too small a market to build a truly large company - but early investors pay NZ VC valuations, rather than US ones. This can make the payoffs much larger - as Halter demonstrates.

@PeteWargent @cmkusher We dont need to build new houses. This makes everyone poor because more house prices means house prices fall! Instead, we need to mandate households rent out all their bedrooms & garages to our freshly printed migrants. At least 10 per household. This would fix the rent crisis!

It's normal to want England to be majority English, to want France to be majority French, to want Australia to be majority Australian, just like it's normal to want Japan to be majority Japanese, Taiwan to be majority Taiwanese, Korea to be majority Korean. Most East Asian countries have much more restrictive immigration policies than Australia ever had. And nobody ever really seems to attack them with demands that they rapidly shift the demographics of their society and culture. We can agree that all human beings are made equal in the image of God while cherishing a sense of unique national identity forged over hundreds of years and dozens of generations

Vietnam is rising. One of my friends just put $100m in a plant there. They built it in 6 months. Like China does. Smart, hard working people. Vietnam will be a mini-China circa 2015. Won’t lead on tech like China but will become a massive exporter powerhouse. Will be interesting in local SE Asia politics as Vietnam becomes a regional superpower.

How safe is the Russian VVER-1200 nuclear reactor ⚛️ for #Vietnam's Ninh Thuận 1 power plant? It's very safe. The VVER-1200 is a modern Generation III+ reactor specifically designed with multiple layers of protection to prevent accidents and mitigate them even in the worst-case scenarios — without needing electricity or human intervention. Here are the key safety features that make it one of the safest nuclear reactors in the world today: 🔷Passive Safety Systems: Gravity-driven cooling and natural convection that can remove heat for 72+ hours completely on their own. No pumps, no diesel generators, no operator action needed (major lesson from Fukushima). 🔷Core Catcher (Core Melt Trap): A unique Russian innovation — a huge 144-ton steel structure under the reactor vessel that catches and safely cools any molten core material if it ever escapes. This prevents the core from burning through the containment. 🔷Double Containment Building: Two independent airtight concrete and steel barriers. Even if the inner one is damaged, the outer one keeps all radioactive material inside. 🔷Passive Heat Removal System (PHRS): Special air and water cooling channels that automatically remove decay heat from the steam generators and the containment vessel without any power. 🔷Extreme External Protection: Built to withstand magnitude 9 earthquakes, powerful typhoons with high wind speeds, coastal flooding, storm surges and tsunami waves. The plant will be protected by a 15-meter high dike (designed well above the historical maximum tsunami wave of ~8 m recorded in the Ninh Thuận area, plus significant safety margin), with critical structures elevated accordingly. The plant is located directly on the coast in Phước Dinh, right by the East Sea (South China Sea). Myself, I think an unusually large tsunami is the main safety risk that the plant needs to consider. 🔷Automatic Shutdown Systems: Boron injection and other mechanisms that instantly stop the nuclear chain reaction if anything abnormal is detected. This reactor is already operating safely in Russia (Novovoronezh II) and Belarus, and is being built in countries like Turkey, Egypt, and Bangladesh. It fully complies with all IAEA international safety standards and goes well beyond post-Fukushima requirements. Vietnam chose this technology because Vietnam wants clean, reliable baseload power with the highest level of safety available today. Nuclear energy done right is one of the safest forms of electricity generation in the world. #VVER1200 #Nuclear #NuclearSafety #CleanEnergy Here’s how a VVER-1200 nuclear power plant actually looks in real life — this is the Novovoronezh II plant in Russia. Located in Novovoronezh, Voronezh Oblast, #Russia (on the bank of the Don River). ⬇️⬇️⬇️

The latest AI tools have leveled the playing field unlike any other commercial technology or philanthropic effort. For a few hundred dollars, anyone in the world has superhuman intelligence at their fingertips. They can build anything, solve any problem, and capture unlimited economic upside. The ramifications of this are not fully understood yet. But I expect we will start hearing stories of people around the world significantly upgrading their life and economic position due to the adoption of these tools. The tech industry tends to focus on who builds large, multi-billion dollar companies, but there are going to be millions of small businesses created that empower social and economic upward mobility. We are so fortunate to be living through such an incredible moment in human history.

Rasmr and Mando's full conversation discussing TAO... "They call it the Bitcoin of Ai" "Essentially the supply of coins gets moved to subnets based off of how much revenue that subnet makes. A subnet is different things people are doing in Ai, it can be an LLM, image generator or prediction markets. There is basically a system that rewards the best thing being built in the network based on their revenue" "There is some cool stuff being built but the difference is Naval is smart and Jason Calacanis is not. There is a different group of cabal behind TAO. It has semi XRP vibes but flashes of this could be the next big thing" "There is some legitimate demand for the idea that we need to have decentralized training of LLMs and a system like this could be an interesting way to do it. There is a lot of promise around it but its not quite there yet"

Not content with hammering Auckland with brutal Covid lockdowns, Chris Hipkins now wants the government to push working from home which would destroy Auckland’s CBD hospitality scene. Hipkins says Auckland’s suburban hospitality businesses are booming, and the CBD’s struggle is down to commercial enterprise, completely oblivious to the devastating impact empty offices would have on the hospitality sector.
