ACT is campaigning to get tough on immigration ahead of the election.
David Seymour unveiled a six-point plan including:
• A dedicated overstayer enforcement unit for nearly 21,000 known overstayers
• No JobSeeker or welfare support for new residents for 5 years
• Higher English language requirements
• Tougher deportation rules for serious offenders
• A $6-a-day infrastructure levy on temporary work visas
Seymour says migrants are welcome if they contribute, respect NZ values and help build the country. In other words, fit in or fuck off. #nzpol

Pretty odd antics on New Zealand X this week about a free trade deal with India, a country that is on track to be one of the worlds largest economies, is a democracy in a world where those are very rare and authoritarianism is growing rapidly, and provides a massive new market for our trading nation in an era of the greatest geopolitical uncertainty in the last 80 years.
Rather than celebrating that; some have been trying to replicate some of the “great replacement” social media angst sweeping Europe - in some cases for what appear to be cynical political reasons, for others out of misunderstanding driven by what they’ve seen from those trying to scare them at a time when they already feel uncertain about the world.
The reality is that New Zealand’s sovereignty over permanent immigration, residency pathways, and citizenship remains fully intact.
The agreement is limited to temporary mobility, and does not create or lock in any permanent outcomes.

I’m not known to take a shine to any other team, coach or player if they don’t represent Penrith but I have nothing but the highest respect and admiration for Bellyache and I wish nothing but the best for this incredible coach and human being.

BREAKING: The man believed to have abducted and murdered innocent five year old Aboriginal Australian child Sharon Granites was released from prison early on bail despite having been imprisoned at least 4 separate times for violent offences over the past 10 years. Justice for Sharon Granites. This is an appalling criminal justice failure. “The ABC has confirmed that over the past decade, Mr Jefferson Lewis has been sentenced to more than five years in prison, for separate, serious violence-related offences. Most recently, he served an 18-month sentence after he pleaded guilty in October 2024 to aggravated assault, engaging in conduct that contravened a domestic violence order, and breaching bail. While already in prison, he was sentenced to a further three months for another count of engaging in conduct that contravened a domestic violence order, and for resisting police. Earlier on, in 2022, he was sentenced to 11 months on separate aggravated assault charges, for which he served eight months and was then released on a good behaviour bond. In 2018, Mr Lewis was sentenced to 19 months in prison, with a non-parole period of 14 months, on four counts including two charges of aggravated assault. In 2016, he was sentenced to 12 months behind bars after pleading guilty to aggravated assault.”

The FTA does not open the floodgates on immigration. It allows around 1,700 temporary three‑year work visas per year - less than 3% of all work visas. And they can’t be renewed. Total numbers are caped so there can’t be more than 5,000 at any one time.
