Calling it generosity when it’s funded by compulsory taxation is a category error. Generosity is voluntary. Redistribution is policy. If you rely on high earners to fund your programs, you can’t coherently treat them as both the necessary source of value and a moral problem at the same time. You’re not being generous. You’re deciding how to allocate someone else’s money, then condemning them for having it.
