What is she on about? We were told that migration was economically beneficial to Britain, that the 12 million that have come to Britain were contributing. Why should the British taxpayer fund foreign people’s housing and benefits? If they can’t afford to be here, they should go home. National debt is 96% of GDP, we can’t even afford to fund our Armed Forces. Britain is not an international reparations welfare state. No first generation immigrant should get welfare or social housing.
Emily Thornberry@EmilyThornberry

Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - an already shameful statistic. But the Earned Settlement model will see that poverty prolonged for 90,000 children in working migrant families. That's why my community says the Government must think again.

Many problems with the immigration system would be solved if we required immigrants to be net fiscal contributors, giving visas on that basis, and sending home people who were not. "Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty" is a terrible indictment of who the system is selecting and allowing to remain here.

Thornberry has just destroyed the core argument for these people being here in the first place: they can’t even keep their kids out of poverty without benefits. But instead of letting that bolster the restrictionist case, she does a full 180 and claims we have some moral duty to keep them here and hand them unlimited access to welfare. Labour is utterly shameless and completely anti-British.

The insanity of this cannot be overstated. The UK defines relative poverty as living in a household with income below 60% of the median income in that year. Because the Boriswave are mostly low-wage, low-skill migrants, many meet this definition the second they step foot in Britain. And because of this, MPs are now arguing this is the group that should be allowed to obtain ILR and permanently settle in Britain, so they can claim benefits and increase the welfare bill further. All this while tax thresholds for working British people have been frozen since 2021 and are set to remain frozen into the 2030s. Just look at the number of people with ILR status who are claiming Universal Credit, in April 2022, it was 95,612, in January 2026, it's 222,076, that's a 132% increase. Britain cannot afford the Boriswave being allowed to settle.

If half of all migrant children are living in poverty doesn’t that mean we’ve allowed too many, low-skilled migrants into Britain who don’t contribute to our economy?

The Left simultaneously argues: - all immigration is economically beneficial and culturally enriching - immigrants are poverty stricken and we’re morally rotten if we don’t spend a fortune on them Their deliberately dishonest thinking will bankrupt us.

Full mask off moment for British politics. LibDem MP Maximilian Wilkinson: 𝕏 is a "massive problem" because it allows free speech for all, to "have their voice heard in a really easy way that they couldn't in the past".

The IMF is warning a brutal energy shock is about to hit Britain harder than most, but Starmer’s big message to business is: “The Government can’t do it on its own. Then what exactly are we paying you for? If a PM openly admits the state is helpless in a crisis, that’s not leadership – it’s a vacancy in Downing Street.

I think that in recent years we have become too BBC-friendly They should concentrate more on making great programmes, and less on social engineering Social engineering is not what they are paid for

Energy security should come before ideology. Imported LNG is expensive, it has to be liquefied, shipped across the world, then converted back into gas. Every step adds cost. Domestic gas from the North Sea goes straight into our system through pipelines. That’s why Norway and the US enjoy cheaper energy and stronger economic growth. Meanwhile the UK has some of the highest energy costs in the world, driven by excessive taxation and an obsession with expensive Net Zero policies that currently provide only around 20% of our energy needs. If we want lower bills and a stronger economy, the answer is simple: use our own resources. Drill sensibly for oil and gas and reduce punitive energy taxes.
