I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs.
My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month.
I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that Id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios.
To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved.
Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal.
You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games.
Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy?
Could they have created more things for fans to buy?
Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games?
Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones?
Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper?
I really don’t know.
The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

QuestZDoom is available on Sidequestvr.com as an APK. You need to provide the base games if you wanna play Doom, Heretic, Hexen etc. We also have the QuestZDoom launcher which does provide an selection of mappacks, mods and vr weapons packs for download directly to the headset.

@TeamBeefVR How does one get QuestZDoom? Is it on the Meta store or do I have to install a pkg? And so, do I need ROMs for the games or...? Thanks for the info! Asking for a friend.

OpenXR is the main thing. Some of our older VR ports were still running on the old Oculus VRapi. But we have been preparing for Steam Frame's release for quite some time and most ports have OpenXR versions by now.
Once Steam Frrame releases we will do our best to bring these ports over asap. Would have been helpful if we had access to dev kits beforehand @valvesoftware 😬. But we will do without it.

BTW, if the XBOX division is scrounging for loose change under the sofa cushions, I’m still willing to put up a $1M guarantee to allow @TeamBeefVR to commercialize the legacy open source games on VR.

We might bring it to Steam Frame though.

@Joeybatz35 @VRbandwagon We released our first official VR port - WRATH: Aeon of Ruin - earlier this year on PSVR2. Sadly unofficial ports are not possible on PSVR2.

A Tomb Raider VR game was cancelled this year, MP1ST reports. Developed by now-shuttered Vertigo Amsterdam. It would have cast players as Lara and adapted traversal, dual-wielding combat and other mechanics to VR. Full report and alleged gameplay video: buff.ly/k2Ax5Sn
