$750 for a lifetime pass is pure insanity, especially for a program that won't let you access stuff on your own LAN if the internet goes out. This was a good program that let me stream my own local content.
Nobody asked for all the streaming deals and outside content (and greed) that are driving this price increase.
I don't even care that I'm grandfathered in having bought the pass years ago when it was reasonable. I'm moving to something else.

Plex has announced a price increase for new Lifetime Plex Pass subscriptions. Starting July 1, 2026, the one-time cost will rise from $249.99 to $749.99. Existing lifetime subscribers will be grandfathered in with no changes to their accounts or benefits. Monthly and annual Plex Pass subscriptions remain unchanged. The company states the adjustment supports the platform's ongoing value and long-term development. Current users can still buy at the old price until the effective date.

@sysstary7556 @Numberz010 Authentication is not required unless you want to use Plex's services to allow you to access it remotely (over Plex DNS).
You can access your server by the local IP without auth.

@Numberz010 Last time I checked, Plex required me to get a 'PLEX-CLAIM' token before I could configure anything else. The worst part was that there was no indication I even needed it. It just said 'download Plex server from...', even though it was already running.

Use FOSS alternative. I've never understood the appeal of plex. The fact that you need get permission before you access media on your disk is fucking absurd.
