@FairDataSociety I think the biggest challenge is having many or no UI to manage everything. You end up stringing together a lot of solutions.

@TechnoTimLive What's your biggest surprise since moving critical services off cloud to self-hosted? Where'd you feel it first?
English

Everything I’m self-hosting in 2026 is live. Full breakdown from Proxmox + TrueNAS + K8S and all the way up through the apps.
What are you hosting right now?

@primex001 Thank you! It just takes practice! I am just a tech dude who one day decided to record what I was working on. Just keep it up and it will start to feel more natural.

I wish I were as good at making videos as @TechnoTimLive. His content inspired me to start learning and building based on my skillet. This is my first attempt.

I built a full network automation lab in Docker on a single home server.
Cisco NSO managing 8 devices across 3 vendors. Grafana dashboards. AI deploying configs in plain English.
No gimmicks — real NSO API integration.

@geerlingguy @codeRunnerUK They are beta testing with in Europe first, US to follow. 😅

MacBook Neo looks like a great low-spec Mac—but limitations abound. Most egregious is the two USB-C ports, as reported by MacRumors, are USB 3.0 (10 Gbps), and USB 2.0 (480 Mbps).
Both support charging, but only the USB 3.0 port supports DisplayPort!

@RaidOwlTweets I went with the Macbook Air M5 with upgraded RAM to replace my old Intel version 😅. I have a Mac Studio to do 99% of my dev and editing work at home so couldn't justify a Macbook Pro. Going from Intel to M5 is going to be 🚀

This one is good enough, it works and it's relatively cheap. I bought it in hopes of one day also buying the toner too, which this supports. If I bought the toner tool, all in it would be about less than $100 which for my light use is what I wanted to spend. If I ever do this professionally I would definitely buy up.
English

@TechnoTimLive I've struggled to find a good cable tester. Do you like your one that you have in that photo there? Would you recommend one that's cheaper and works similar?
English

@bomorgantech Yeah, still baffled how it was getting power and negotiating but somehow my switch knew? Now the most clear warning but knowing about it is more than half of the battle.
English

Nothing humbles you faster than layer 1.
The fact it was still negotiating 2.5G and pushing PoE is exactly what makes these annoying. Partial pairs will pass just enough to lie to you while throwing degradation flags. Good call starting with the keystone instead of chasing ghosts in the switch.
English

@TechnoTimLive My testing with Ubiquiti switches I found them to mark good cables bad sometimes. But if this is happening like you say a test of the wire using something like a Scout Pro Max will determine not just wiring but speed of the wiring (up to 10Gbps).
English

@rmerck I thought it was a bug in their software and called their bluff... for a month....
English

@TechnoTimLive Man... I'd have thought you of all people would have started at Layer 1! (I've done it too and its infuriating when you realize you should have started there)
English

@Fisher85M I had that happen to me once here at home too! My old VMware server's NIC would broadcast like crazy to where nothing could communicate, took the whole network out.
English

@TechnoTimLive I remember an issue we had ~12 years ago, where the entire network was down after decommissioning a Small Business Server. It turns out, the issue wasn’t at all the SBS being decommissioned, but a faulty NIC on a workstation chatting like crazy.
English

@HomeNetworkGuy_ I think that's what happed to this, maybe bumped with the vacuum or something.
English

@TechnoTimLive Nice! I’ve had to do this a time or 2 some of the connections I had terminated in the last couple years. Had one instance where it worked fine for a while but then it stopped working for an IP camera so after re-termination it worked again.
English

@OnyxCrack Agreed. It's worse than LEGO quality plastic haha. Very hallow.
English

@TechnoTimLive It does work.. just was surprised when a co worker lent me his Klein.. for the price it should of been better
English

@nmrn1gc Haha elapsed. It's just been hanging around while a while in the UI. I tried everything I could remote first, I have just been too busy to physically test everything!
English

@OnyxCrack I'm sure, I've had this for years. Super cheap but gets the job done in my home.
English

@drivinginkorea @davepl1968 This is what happens to me, already once this week because I read it on my phone.
English

@davepl1968 @TechnoTimLive 4) read it and promise yourself you'll get to it later, but in reality ignore it
