@solassefa Have you tried Google Deep Research? It’s the best research tool I found so far with referenced and well written content.

I now use AI tools routinely for research, drafting document structures and small scripts that run in the background for google sheets. AI if used well improves productivity and is a great assistant. Folks in all walks of life can find ways to integrate AI in their daily lives.

@th_b_e @alemayehuGeda Telecos are more closer to the unbanked population than banks. They provide financing and easy access services than the traditional banks. Cloud and other services, they are already providing those.

@alemayehuGeda This trend of companies going off their core business is concerning. The airline running resorts for example. There are a lot of telecom areas(data centers, gvt services, cloud, networking etc) with potential for growth(Africa wide even). Why not pursue those as a telecom company

ቴሌ ገብቶታል:the future of telecom is not voice or even data but finance(50% of Safaricom Kenya's revenue is from MPesa, jumping from 30% 3+ yrs back).ፍሬህይውት is great but she needs to create a system of succession like EAL in case she isn't there for some crazy reason.

After leaving Kimberley in 1986 to find myself a place in the world; 30 years after returning to South Africa to vote for the first democratic republic post apartheid, and 20 years after leading the rebranding of this magnanimous 150 years old institution, the 10th biggest university in the world with some 400,000 students, I'm beyond humbled to return here to join some 300 outstanding Africans and global luminaries who have been bestowed with this honour since 1899, including Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Koffi Annan, to be honoured with a doctorate (hc) for my contributions to our Africa and branding. It was arguably one of the most incredible ceremonies I've been to ably led by the inspirational and impressive Prof. @LenkaBula and her council and staff. I'm honoured.

This is the result when an African country engaging with China (for that matter the West too) but has no skilled human capital to negotiate, implement & ensure technological & manaheria transfer. Our Africa-china research @AERCAFRICA (Eth included) was telling this since 2010.

#Ethiopia: A crumbling metro reveals failed promise of #China’s billions in #Africa Once hailed as a game-changer for #Addis_Abeba's transportation, the city's light-rail system now stands as a symbol of broken promises. Originally designed to carry up to 60,000 passengers per hour, the system's reality falls short, with only one-third of its trains operational. Frequent breakdowns, inadequate maintenance, and operational constraints have left commuters frustrated. Yared Mekuanint, a regular user, describes waiting times of up to 25 minutes between services, only to find overcrowded trains upon arrival. Despite being one of 70 mega-projects funded by a $14.8 billion loan from China, the light rail struggles to repay its debt. The project, managed by Chinese firms, faces challenges like power outages and limited access to spare parts. Critics argue that short-term political goals overshadowed long-term sustainability in planning the project. Frangton Chiyemura, an expert in China-Africa relations, highlights the need for better planning and local skills development. Addis Abeba officials are now taking steps to address these issues, transferring management of the system to the city transport agency. Meanwhile, commuters seek alternative transportation, signaling a shift away from the once-promising light-rail system. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

@Teddysisay Speaking of fundemntals in Kenya: diversification of exports & reducing significan import & debt dependency is key to have a stable Shilling. See my 2021 Kenyan UNCTD Working paper on Macroeconomic Effect of COVID19 in Kenya. I adressed this issue there.

I thought this is settled: deperciated cause speculstors thought govt will come to market&buy $ to finance its Euroboand debt&appreciated back when such expectaton is frustrated. Looks what Keynes called discontinous behavior in expectation formation(hapoend in Zambia 2015).👇1/2

Kenya shilling vs US Dollar rate chart over the last one year is quite a phenomenon 🤔. Few currencies have had such a spectacular show in one year without an equally spectacular event to back it up.

@Sonic_2430 @rajrohit666 @MorningBrew @MKBHD You are comparing two different things. Products are sold to customers. I don’t need to be an engineer to know the car I am buying is good or bad. He is reviewing it as a customer not as an engineer.

1/ Youtuber @MKBHD recently tested Fisker's latest EV and called it the "worst car I've ever reviewed." The video has picked up 4.3 million views since he posted it and even reached execs at the company. But things got really weird when Fisker responded. Let's get into it.

@Kenyans African leaders will find excuses all the time. As the old adage goes economic malaise demands a scapegoat. All these countries they mention are the least religious, they fight corruption, set up the right institutions, invest in education and infrastructure.

ADD to Mombassa flight will cost more than 2x of NY to LA despite the later being 3x the distance. I love @flyethiopian and all, but the market needs stiff competition for consumers to benefit and economies to prosper in the long run. The current quasi monopoly is not good.

@SamRosmarin Second mortgage is not what made housing expensive. Land is super expensive and not available. That is the core of the issue

I’m pretty sure their data on Ethiopia only considers Addis Ababa. This underscores the need to develop economies and infrastructure in secondary cities. Addis Ababa cannot support the urbanization pressures (1 million people each year) of the entire country.
Zemedeneh Negatu@Zemedeneh

African countries with the most expensive housing markets, @BusinessInsider: 1 #Cameroon 2 #Ethiopia 3 Algeria 4 Morocco 5 Egypt 6 Tunisia 7 #Kenya 8 #SouthAfrica Ethiopia: One reason housing is 2nd most expensive in Africa & 3rd in the world is lack of affordable mortgages. Currently there’s only one relatively small new mortgage bank in Ethiopia. One more is “under formation”. However, several more mortgage banks are needed considering the huge size of the housing demand, overall economic growth and the need to provide affordable financing to make millions of Ethiopians homeowners. Also, mortgage off-takers and secondary mortgage market players are needed similar to what we have in the U.S. - the two GSEs, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Ethiopia, SSA’s 3rd largest GDP and the second most populous African country with 127 million people, is adding 2.5 million to its population annually. Also, urbanization is expanding at a rate of approximately 4% per year. Private local developers - most are relatively new, established within the last 10 to 15 years - can’t meet the significant housing demand which is driven by demographics and rapid urbanization. The new housing PPP (pubic private partnership) initiatives recently introduced by the federal and regional governments to partner with private developers, should help alleviate the housing shortages and moderate prices especially since land will be provided by the government and significant tax breaks given to import materials tax free. Final thought: Most finishing materials are currently imported. Locally manufacturing these items will significantly reduce the long supply chain, save FX and shorten the delivery time of finished houses.
