Reposted: 🇺🇲WWII uncovered: 🎂 HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY to Mel Brooks: From the Battle of the Bulge to Blazing Saddles 🎂 Please join us at WWII uncovered in wishing Mel Brooks a most Happy 100th Birthday. Born Melvin James Kaminsky on June 28, 1926 Brooks joined the US Army right out of high school in 1944 at the age of 17. A native of Brooklyn New York, Melvin was recruited by the elite Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and sent to Virginia Military Institute to be taught skills such as military engineering, as well as horsemanship and saber-wielding. When the combat arms complained that ASTP deprived them of the brightest enlisted men, the Army terminated the program after young Private Kaminsky had received twelve weeks of training. He then went to Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for regular basic training." "Shipped to Europe in late 1944, Melvin's first duties were as a forward artillery observer. Next he was assigned to the 1104th Engineer Combat Group in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge. The 1104th ECB became the first unit to throw a bridge across the Ruhr River, and later on, it built bridges across the Rhine. Kaminsky’s tasks included clearing minefields and defusing land mines. It was an extremely dangerous job, especially when Private Kaminsky had to perform his duties while exposed to enemy fire." "The unit constructed the first bridge over the Roer River and built similar structures over the Rhine and Weser rivers and the Lippe and Aur-Oker canals. It also destroyed pillboxes and cleared roads. By the end of the war in Europe the 1104th was conducting a reconnaissance of the Harz Mountains." - US Army Corps of Engineers At the end of the war, now Corporal Kaminsky, spent his remaining time in service organizing and performing in shows to entertain the troops. After being discharged from the Army, Melvin returned to New York and resumed his career in entertainment as a comedic writer. His many achievements include an Emmy, an Oscar, a Grammy and a Tony Award. The former Melvin James Kaminsky of Brooklyn New York may be best known for many of his works such as: Blazing Saddles, The Producers, Young Frankenstein, in addition to numerous television and Broadway projects. He is a comic's comic-- He is Mel Brooks. In an interview many years later, iconic comic Mel Brooks talked of his service during the war: “I was a combat engineer. Isn’t that ridiculous? The two things I hate most in the world are combat and engineering“. We wish you the happiest of Birthdays Mr. Brooks. Thank you for your service to your country and your continuing gift of laughter. #ww2uncovered #happybirthday #birthdaywishes #birthday #birthdaycelebration #melbrooks #WWIIVeterans #blazingsaddles #youngfrankenstein #lestweforget #wewillrememberthem WWII uncovered©️ Original description and photos sourced by US Army Corps of Engineers, US Signal Corps and Angela George (Free Use Photos)

He synthesized the medicine that stopped arthritis pain for millions, so they threw explosives through his window. In 1950, Dr. Percy Julian, a pioneering chemist who synthesized steroids, bought a home in Oak Park, Illinois. He was fifty-one. He was also a Black man moving into an all-white suburb. The local water company refused to turn on his service. The town wanted him out. Julian didn't leave. He went to work. At his laboratory in Chicago, he studied plant sterols. At the time, cortisone was extracted from the bile of slaughtered oxen. It cost hundreds of dollars. Only the rich could afford to stop hurting. Julian changed the math. He figured out how to mass-produce cortisone using cheap soybeans. But a brilliant mind couldn't buy him peace at home. On Thanksgiving Eve in 1950, before the family even unpacked, attackers threw a firebomb onto their property. Eight months later, dynamite exploded under his children's bedroom window. The police chief advised him to move to a different town. According to historical records from the Oak Park police, Julian instead climbed into a tree in his front yard with a shotgun. He sat in the dark branches. He guarded his own front door. He held more than 130 chemical patents. U.S. Patent No. 2,752,339 details the exact process that brought affordable steroids to pharmacy shelves worldwide. He stayed in Oak Park until his death in 1975. Genius rarely gets a quiet neighborhood. Today, millions of people swallow a daily pill that stops their joints from aching. They do not know his name. The house on East Chicago Avenue is still standing. Percy Julian: the man who synthesized relief. Source: PBS NOVA "Forgotten Genius" Historical Archive. Today we remember the 19 U.S. Air Force service members who lost their lives in the Khobar Towers terrorist bombing on June 25, 1996, in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The attack injured hundreds and forever changed the lives of countless military families. These Airmen were serving far from home, standing watch and answering the call of duty when their lives were taken by an act of terror. As we honor their sacrifice, we also remember the courage of those who responded in the aftermath and the families who carried on despite unimaginable loss. Thirty years later, their service and sacrifice are not forgotten. Please join me in remembering the fallen of Khobar Towers and keeping their families in our thoughts today. @SILK2197 @BlackAndNative1 I tried watching the first episode of the Bass Reeves series, and I couldn't get through it. He tried so hard to sound like a Black American, and ended up sounding like he had marbles in his mouth. Absolutely abysmal performance. He's arrogant to think he could pull it off.

A mom is speaking out after a boy tried to strangle her 5-year-old daughter in kindergarten. She wanted answers and pushed for a meeting with the school and the other parents to understand what happened. The school initially gave the boy a 3-day suspension and wouldn’t set up the meeting she asked for. That same night at her son’s t-ball practice, the other family glared and pointed at them. The boy’s 10-year-old sister even came over and asked the 5-year-old what it was like to be strangled. The mom kept pushing. After meeting with the principal, the boy was expelled for the rest of the year and removed from the t-ball team. Her daughter is physically okay but pretty shaken up emotionally. She’s only five and had never even heard of something like this. When something this serious happens with little kids, a short suspension isn’t enough. Parents often have to fight hard for real accountability and safety. Would you have kept pushing like this mom did? I sure would have.

On June 7th, 1998, in Jasper, Texas. 3 known white supremacists lynched a Black man named James Byrd. He was beaten and had his throat slit. While still alive, he was chained to the back of a pickup truck and dragged for 3 miles. His head, torso, and arm were severed halfway through. They threw the remaining lower half of his body on the lawn of a Black cemetery. This is one of MANY examples of what race relations were like in the 90s and what it has always been like for Black people long before a political party was ever thought of.
