Many UK tax thresholds haven't been updated for inflation in years: 🔸 £12,570 Personal Allowance (2021) would be £16k today 🔸 £50,270 higher-rate tax threshold (2021) would be £64k today 🔸 £100k threshold (2010) would be £159k today More people are paying higher taxes without realising.

The bond market is now in the room. They have arrived. Britain’s ten-year borrowing cost has risen to around 5.08%. Thirty-year borrowing is approaching 5.8%. The government is already expected to spend about £109 billion on debt interest this year, while issuing roughly £252 billion of new gilts. A sustained 0.1 percentage-point increase in the cost of that new borrowing could eventually add around £250 million a year to the interest bill. A full percentage point could mean approximately £2.5 billion. The gilt market does not care about speeches, applause or popular announcements. It asks four questions: What does it cost? Who pays? How much must Britain borrow? And does this government have control? Andy Burnham cannot afford to ignore it. Is he another Liz Truss? Not yet.

@suzyquiquero He just wants to do the domestic stuff, get the easy wins then figure it out later. Miliband isn’t going to do it all on his own, they don’t have a clue..

Geri Scott@Geri_E_L_Scott

New: Anas Sarwar is expected to become a minister in Andy Burnham's government. It would mean he would be given a peerage and step down as Scottish Labour leader. Sarwar was the first senior Labour voice to call for Keir Starmer to resign.
