Elon has reiterated that there are no plans to use AI5 chips in customer vehicles for the foreseeable future. The chip will be focused on @Tesla_Optimus and supercomputers. Tesla remains on track for releasing Full Self-Driving Unsupervised on the latest FSD computer (AI4).
Elon Musk@elonmusk

@teslaownersSV @TaiwanSemi_TSC @Samsung Optimus and our supercomputer clusters. AI4 is enough to achieve much better than human safety for FSD.

@eu_bike @applelinux About half of the features are expected to be in HW3 (though not necessarily the most exciting ones)! But will have to wait until we actually see the rollout begin.

The Tesla Spring Update has reportedly been spotted within the fleet on software update 2026.14. We have not yet detected this update on our platform.

@CarawayDJ @MissJilianne We really make an effort not to post anything that is short of truthful or reality, and when we do, we will specify that it is speculative or an opinion. Given the sentiment that AI5 is not for vehicles, AI4 remains the latest and greatest and will be used for Unsupervised.

The first portion of the post is based on his quote (and you can argue captures what he said precisely). The second part is a general statement based on prior (and still true) information from Tesla. You can include such in the same post without attributing it to putting words in anyone's mouth.

Elon reiterated FSD unsupervised would be safe on HW3/AI3vehicles but it’s yet to be proven. Same with HW4/AI4 cars. HW4/AI4 has been on privately owned Tesla vehicles since early 2023. HW4/AI4 is old tech.

@teslascope @SawyerMerritt Tesla owner since 2019. The FSD transfer policy is a mess. These random "3-week windows" follow no logic—you never know when they’ll start or end. It should be a one-time permanent option.

Good look at the interior of the redesigned Tesla Semi, which is set to enter volume production in the coming months. • Changed side windows so the driver can reach out • Cupholders moved farther up for easier access • Larger side storage area next to cupholders • Wireless phone chargers • Dual 16" screens, same as ones from the new Model Y (15.4" before) • In-cabin attention monitering camera

@spleck @DirtyTesLa @SawyerMerritt Yeah, I'm hopeful that with such a discovery, we'll receive some better guidance on what upgradability paths are viable for HW3 in the next earnings call.

@teslascope @DirtyTesLa @SawyerMerritt Further, Elon has doubled down saying AI5 is not for vehicles and AI4 gets it done. I was understandable pushing off HW3 retrofits when the hardware requirements for autonomy were unclear. But if they are saying AI4 is the answer, then the HW3 retrofit process can be defined.

So we know that HW3 is currently being worked on because it has continued to receive minor updates to the underlying model. This can be seen in the 2026.8.6 and 2026.8.6.1 updates with altered, driving behavior and loosened driver monitoring. This has also been confirmed with Green. So we know that Tesla is working on HW3 still it's just a question of how close are they to bringing V14 Lite to it.

@teslascope @SawyerMerritt The important question to be asked is - is it actively being worked on? Or is it still a “we will do it when we solve this other thing” situation. If they aren’t actively working on it, there likely needs to be an alternative solution - like free FSD transfers, or refunds…

@teslascope @SawyerMerritt I believe the delay and lack of more clear communication since Q4 2024 is they are waiting to confirm HW4 will complete Full Unsupervised Driving first. They do NOT want to upgrade HW3 to HW4 if eventually HW5 is needed.

@JonBbC_TechGeek @SawyerMerritt When there’s a patent relating to HW3, spotlight it! If there’s internal testing being done with V14 Lite, share videos (with disclaimers of incomplete nature)! People crave data and information.

Well balanced as usual. 🙏 You bring up 2 really great points. 1) Everyone has wildly different opinions on how long it’s appropriate to wait, and 2) Tesla could do more to communicate with HW3 FSD owners. Even if it’s simply reconfirming old statements. When the topic is missed in 2 back-to-back earnings calls, owners have a really hard time waiting 6-9 months or more.

@teslascope @DirtyTesLa @SawyerMerritt We know what they hope they can do. We want to know what happens if they can't. Something like "We will offer a one-time transfer indefinitely", "if we can't get it by X date, we'll give you your money back", or "we will continue to try forever, so you aren't owed anything"

@mrfundman @DirtyTesLa @SawyerMerritt Much love! We're right there with everyone with wanting a happy resolution to this with voices heard. Timelines can slip (life happens), but I think more constant updates on progress and approaching timelines / overcoming roadblocks, will help a lot.

@teslascope @SawyerMerritt Tesla committed to upgrading FSD users to the latest hardware, and then produced an un-upgradable-from-HW3 HW4. What else is there to say except that Tesla isn’t following through with their promise?

Yeah, we're generally (personally) fine with the current affair of things as Tesla can't really do much until they've solved it for AI4 customer vehicles. We're fine with that answer, but in the absence of that, we acknowledge there's many who are not (and some voices louder outside of NA). Which we tried to include in our post; I think rationally the answers Tesla has given is genuine, so trying to solve why it's not sitting well with everyone else. 👍

Let's apply some context here. Tesla provided many timelines for FSD versions. How often are they accurate? Do we think it's going to be any different for HW3 upgrade timelines? HW3 simply isn't their priority right now. There are much bigger fish to fry. After those fish are fried, they can focus on HW3. And that's when we should start asking questions about what's happening with HW3 (beyond what's already been asked and answered). That is, I think people are setting themselves up for more frustration and disappointment if they're asking for timelines and Tesla gives one.
Teslascope@teslascope

As a HW3 Model 3 owner (and one of the first to get a retrofit from HW2.5), I don’t think it’s per se an issue with the answer we’ve received from Tesla, and more so the timeline. Everyone has their own tolerances for waiting; while I don’t mind waiting years, others feel differently. Many will lose their vehicle or sell it (whether to upgrade to another Tesla or not) before seeing Unsupervised come to fruition. So I think that rephrasing the question to request a formal timeline and commitment, rather than guestimations, would appease the largest group of HW3 owners. “You will receive Unsupervised after we solve it on AI4” has already been given (and is a solid answer). Still, without tangible commitments, it leaves owners (and retail investors) with more questions. If a software only solution is on the table, more confidence is necessary. If a form of retrofit is required, try to set a firm limit on anticipation. I believe we all mutually feel this way. ❤️
