Quantum Computers Might Reveal New Physics Tim Palmer from the University of Oxford has published a new paper arguing that quantum computers will eventually stop working. His argument is that the entanglement in quantum computers will eventually reach a limit due to Planck scale discreteness – not of spacetime, but of the Hilbert space of quantum mechanics. If so, quantum computers might never succeed in decrypting large codes. I think this specific prediction is very unlikely to be correct, but it seems possible to me that quantum computers will indeed reveal some new physical phenomena. It never ceases to amaze that Sabine's biggest fans are always the non physicists, with little to no understanding of physics. Now, I'm no physicist myself. The most important thing I learned at Moriond today was that ACT and SPT can now constrain the Hubble constant INDEPENDENT of Planck, to similar uncertainty, and they agree with Planck (low H0), and disagree with supernovae at more than 5 sigma. This is important because it for all practical purposes rules out an undetected systematic in the Planck data as an explanation for the Hubble tension. This is BIG, but it was a throwaway line on one slide.
