"There's certainly more demand, the problem is they haven't made new IMAX film projectors in about 50 years," says IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond. "So we retrofit them, rebuild them and part of our strategy is to see how far we can take it. But certainly, demand-driven, I'd like to see more."

@BenGSchout Weird comment, considering the average age of a director making their first feature is 40, and considering that her previous works were shot on digital and she has switched to film for this one.

@The24thFrame Olivia Wilde is also a filmmaker in her 40s. It seems to me film is largely a middle aged game, or for people who worked at a time when film was the default. I don't know if newer filmmakers see it as anything other than an affect rather than a viable choice

@BenGSchout I don’t think film will ever be the go-to medium for very low-budget films, but there are a number of filmmakers operating in the sub-$10 mil range who are able to shoot on film. The Invite, for example, is all 35mm.

@The24thFrame That's a tremendous accomplishment but as far as I can tell all that's done is let the people who already shoot on film keep shooting it and elevate the IMAX 70MM format into a tourist attraction. As far as I can tell, it is not any easier for young filmmakers to shoot on film

I just saw “The Invite” and loved “The Studio” and thought about how Seth Rogen has grown as a comedian and actor and that’s why he’s still relevant. Watching Will Ferrell talk about laying down drag bunts at the home run derby, I realized why we aren’t talking about him anymore.

@jailedamanda Basically, I think he’s more interested in maximizing the screen real estate in any given theater rather than ensuring the images are composed in the exact same way for each viewer.

@jailedamanda I think part of it is that Nolan’s a big believer in the “big screen experience” and while in an IMAX theater 1.43:1 offers the largest image… Using that aspect ratio in most standard digital theater will require pillar-boxing and result in a smaller overall image.

this makes no sense, they would not read as peers at all. Even beyond the actual 10 year age gap, both of these men read very cleanly as their respective generations. Two of the most Gen X and Millennial men alive, respectively.

dude it was shot on 35mm, you gotta see it they shot it on vista vision, bro it’s imax 15/70, they used vertical anamorphic lenses, bro they struck a nitrate print, the cameras are literally from the mgm vault, they printed Alexa footage to film and then scanned it, bro 70mm
