REAL FOOD is, in many cases, cheaper than ultra-processed foods. @SecWar and I are shifting military meals from the appalling food that only one-third of the troops were eating, to REAL whole food that is more affordable.

CONTAINER FARMING OF PERENNIAL CROPS: Redefining Sustainable Food Systems This stunning photograph captures something genuinely revolutionary banana plants, a traditionally field-grown tropical perennial, thriving in large containers inside a controlled greenhouse environment. It's a powerful visual argument for rethinking how and where we grow perennial food crops. WHAT WE'RE SEEING Rows of mature banana plants are growing in substantial black plastic containers, placed on a gravel floor inside a well-lit greenhouse structure. Each plant is bearing visible fruit bunches at various stages, and a characteristic banana flower is visible on the right confirming these are productive, fully fruiting plants. A drip irrigation system runs along the floor, delivering precise water and nutrient solutions directly to each container. Yellow identification tags suggest systematic crop management and variety tracking. WHY CONTAINER FARMING OF PERENNIALS MATTERS Traditionally, perennial crops like bananas, plantains, and fruit trees demand large land areas, specific soil types, and favorable climates. Container farming breaks every one of those limitations. By growing in controlled substrates within containers, farmers can establish productive perennial systems on rooftops, degraded lands, urban spaces, or in climates where these crops would never naturally survive. This dramatically expands where food can be grown. PRECISION RESOURCE MANAGEMENT The drip irrigation system visible in the image is central to this system's sustainability credentials. Water and dissolved nutrients are delivered directly to the root zone with minimal waste a stark contrast to flood or furrow irrigation common in conventional banana plantations. Container growing also allows individual plant management, meaning underperforming or diseased plants can be isolated and replaced without disrupting the entire crop. CONTRIBUTION TO SUSTAINABLE FOOD SYSTEMS Perennial crops are inherently more sustainable than annuals, they don't require replanting every season, their root systems protect soil structure continuously, and they sequester carbon over longer periods. When combined with container technology and controlled environments, the sustainability credentials multiply. Year-round production becomes possible, reducing supply chain dependence and food miles. Food security improves because production is decoupled from seasonal and climatic uncertainty. Scalability and the Future This model is scalable from smallholder level to commercial greenhouse operations. As urbanization accelerates and arable land shrinks globally, innovations like container-grown perennials represent a critical frontier in sustainable agriculture. Growing food closer to where people live, with fewer resources and greater control, is not just innovative, it's essential for building truly resilient food systems for future generations.

@nbcsandiego But we don't have a shortage. The City of San Diego has 12,500+ units available for rent right now. Why is every city saying the same exact thing: that we have a shortage and need affordable housing towers when there is abundant inventory? @RichardPBailey_ @MayorToddGloria

@LukeSlywaker @RapidResponse47 @SueKee4 @joerogan @POTUS I don't know.....I did acid in college and then 15 years later was given a sedative during a failed pregnancy operation and went straight into an evil cartoon I couldn't exit from. I'd just be careful. Or do it with Luke who seems to be generally positive and confident.

@JeremyTate41 I didn't understand Calculus in high school. But I took it later as an adult and realized it's just how you figure out your mortgage payment.

Why do we do math in school? When I asked this question as a kid, my teachers always told me, “You’ll use it one day.” That’s almost always false. Most adults are never going to be in a sticky situation with two binomials, thinking, thank goodness I can FOIL my way out of this mess. Most of us get by just fine without ever solving for x again. And especially in an AI age, fewer and fewer people will “use math” in the narrow, practical sense. But the origins of math have never been primarily about utility. Math is formative. It trains the mind to love what is true, to recognize what is orderly, and to be drawn toward what is beautiful. It teaches us that the universe is not chaos, but something intelligible, something structured, something that can be known. And you can see that truth made visible in the world’s most breathtaking churches and cathedrals: arches, vaults, domes, proportions, symmetry, harmony, light—geometry turned into glory. The mathematics that shapes a cathedral is not cold or sterile. It’s the language of wonder, carved into stone. We don’t teach math because everyone will use it. We teach math because it forms the kind of person who can see that reality has meaning.

Gardening is actually very therapeutic and rewarding. Gardeners live longer too, because you start thinking on longer timelines and you want to see your garden grow.

No Farmers, No Food

An idea: The Farmacy / Great British Food Larder Shop Create a food supply enterprise campaign that supports farmers and revitalises high street retail by turning many of our empty high street premises into a cooperative national enterprise or farm shops and also local food deliveries. A nationwide (but locally focused) retail cooperative that also saves the high street. UK farmers receive negligible income while supermarkets receive record profits. An average block of cheese or loaf of bread produces less than a penny for farmers and fruit producers make just 3p from each kilo of apples. Consumers are being fleeced by giant supermarket corporations which have added to escalating food inflation as part of the cost of living crisis. Bypass the supermarket and buy direct from a local farm. Better prices for farmers. Better prices for consumers. Farming only becomes genuinely self sustainable by finding pathways towards self sufficient localism through circular economies. Ideally, create a national chain of farm shops that serve local communities and which buy from farmers at a much better price than supermarkets and with no prohibitive business rates from local councils). This idea would also help the environment due to reduced local food transportation costs and also provide wider access to locally produced healthy food from the field to the fork.
