Both sets of my grandparents had to leave their homes, that fell on the Pakistan side of the border, during Partition. Only my nani is around now. It's why this story is so close to my heart. I spoke to @kavpuri on her heart-wrenching book for @Openthemag openthemagazine.com/lounge/books/k…

This country has been run like a reality show since 2014. Keep people busy with stunts, slogans and spectacles while crises burn in the background. People were gasping for oxygen during Covid, the government told them to bang vessels. Now the world is staring at a dangerous US-Israel-Iran escalation and instead of preparedness or transparency, citizens are being told to use public transport and post selfies. Governance has been replaced by event management.

I like that PM Modi is flying around the country, holding roadshows with huge convoys, so he can convey the message that we should all stop using cars and conserve fuel. 🙏

the terrifying reality is that everyone on here is by definition at least a tiny bit interested and invested in reading and/or writing. this is where the people who enjoy text gather. this is where the most literate of us are massed. and it leads to constant arguments

All the regional forces that kept Modi away from majority in 2024 will be erased systematically. Have said this before, will say it again: there’s no point participating in a fixed game. You’re only helping legitimise a rigged election.

This is why people should read more fiction. How to make techbros understand that human happiness and fulfilment are not quantifiable concepts. You can't "name one upgrade" because you have not lived that life, you don't have that experience, and no two experiences within that are comparable. Each life is full and complete in itself, each choice unique and distinctive. You can't measure these choices to see which one is an upgrade, like adding features to a new iphone. You make a choice and you live, as happily or unhappily as a thousand factors beyond your control and your own brain chemistry determine.
Vijay Thirumalai@vijaythirumalai

DINK - quick Q, what do u do with all the time you have & all the money you make? Sure you can travel coz u don't have constraints wrt school etc but how else is ur life better compared to the friends in same position with kids Name one upgrade, I'll wait.

While airmenus are the literal worst, I will never understand why even high-end restaurants in India only hand out 2 or fewer menus per table...it's so frustrating esp when you go out in a group. Are they cutting costs? Do they not consider menus as part of the whole experience?
Shivani@shivanimatla

i absolutely hate when some restaurants ask you to scan a qr for the menu because now it’s a table full of friends just on their phones. the joy of collectively flipping through well designed menus and debating what to order while yapping is such a wholesome experience. i get the operational ease but something very real was lost

@anniezaidi I just discovered that so many of my pieces from DNA have just disappeared from their website. No way to access archives either :(

This is a real problem. In the days of print, because whole newspapers & mags were preserved in archives, & each publication usually kept its own record, we could find all our published work years later. That's no longer the case. My own work has disappeared from the internet

The progression of Bollywood blinds in 2026 is wild...everyone asking Grok for answers lol. Fifteen years ago, we'd be plumbing the depths of the internet, lurking on Bollywood Basket and discussions Rajeev Masand's blinds in the comment threads of Open Magazine.

Former journos who switched sectors for more stability (financial and otherwise), are you still writing? Something dies inside me every time I come across AI-generated content...I read a lot but I need to start writing again to cope with the brainrot. What have you found helpful?

Childfree women…what’s the silliest reason you have for not wanting kids. I’m not talking about world problems or financial reasons (because duh) but the ones that others would find dumb. I’ll go first: spending my weekends watching kids sports would be a special form of torture to me 🤣

@ramachandranesk I enjoyed their early episodes because the yapping was a break from other stimulating podcast content, especially when I wanted to take my mind off things. Can't handle it anymore...the ignorance feels so much more deliberate now.

genuinely thought sakshi shivdasani and naina bhan were adding value to society by just being their refreshing ignorant selves--women deserve to be openly stupid without being judged for it because what man isn't + what standard of 'serious' intelligence isn't masculinised--but after watching this one reel of theirs giggling about how they "gave it" to a cop who didn't take their complaint about domestic violence seriously (instead of focusing on the DV!), I'm officially like--okay, maybe they're just stupid

Literally had to squeeze past a dog pooping on a narrow footpath while his walker/owner just stood there staring into space. That's life for pedestrians living in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in the city.
ANMOL JAMWAL@jammypants4

This is totally random, but… Bandra has a major poop problem. Footpaths are inundated with dog faeces. An area with expensive residential properties and the swankiest cars and lifestyle still doesn’t have the etiquette to pick up after its pets.

Mumbai Fatigue should be a thing. This city drains you. Roads are dug up everywhere. The air and noise pollution because of construction work leaves you with a headache. Want to go to a green space to recharge? Well, you can't. Not only because there are so few of them, but

This is exactly why ppl should travel (if you can afford it). You will realize how much you are being taken for a ride by politicos in your country only if you step out & visit other places.
ish@charassiaaa

Reached Delhi after returning from Sri Lanka and I am so numb. Our lives in India really amount to nothing. You don’t need to compare India with Europe man - there’s a country with so much better air, roads, infrastructure, cleanliness and civic sense right in our neighbourhood.

Milky Mist's high-protein paneer is for the nerdy kids with an enviable stationery collection who grew up to become protein junkies because why tf does that shit taste like erasers? It may have 50gms of protein per pack but it has 0 gms of joy.
