Virginia Democrats have passed a bill that eliminates an existing rule requiring secured cash bail for anyone who has been convicted of a prior felony, is on probation or parole, or is already out on bond for a different crime. There's no reason at all to repeal this existing law. Why on earth would you want to make it EASIER for someone with a criminal trackrecord to get out on an unsecured bond if they've already been arrested multiple times?

My husband, who is of Italian descent, mentioned something interesting yesterday. It is true that when Italians first came here, they got the side-eye, discrimination, etc. They also tended to excessive nepotism and clannishness. His position is that Italian-Americans are American today **because** no one shielded them from the social pressures to assimilate. Did they have to entirely abandon their heritage/identity/customs? No. But modifying enough to work within an American context was non-negotiable. So in his view, despite some of those early years being somewhat uncomfortable for his forbears, that sort of pressure is a good thing. And that by no longer allowing assimilation pressure to be exerted, we are actually preventing any chance of a multi-ethnic polity being functional. Some of you are opposed to a multi-ethnic polity at all, but among those who aren’t, and think it’s fine - you cannot get that by babying immigrants and throwing yourself between them and every insult or jostle.

The fact nobody wants to face is that some people, a small minority, are just not capable of living in civilized society. They’ll never be capable of it. They won’t be reformed or rehabilitated. They won’t be made into productive citizens. There won’t be any happy ending for them. We can either face this reality and deal with them accordingly, or we can insist, as we have done for decades, to live in a fantasy world where a guy who’s been arrested 10 times before the age of 25 might one day magically reform himself and become a businessman with a wife and three children and a mortgage that he pays on time every month. Something like 70 to 75 percent of Americans are never arrested in their lives. Another 20 to 25 percent are arrested once, usually for something minor. Almost all of the arrests, especially for violent crimes, are coming from about 5 percent of the population. If all of these people were just thrown in a cage forever and forgotten about, the rest of us could live in peace. That's a fact. You could essentially solve the crime problem, almost completely, by arresting the tiny minority of the population that commits basically all of it. Instead we let them roam the streets, continually release them back into the public, and watch helplessly as they kill, rape, and destroy, even though nobody on Earth can explain why this system makes sense, or is fair, or moral, or just.
