@djjordan23uk @MovingShadowHQ I got the first few but they started to feel like a marketing gimmick & some tunes on them felt a bit fillerish, caught static for saying that in the internet age of awareness, but it was how I felt bitd. Some great tracks though tbf, the Cloud 9 track on vol 1 is a classic.

The Two on One series in 1994 came with this epic, blank disc. It’s apparently limited to 30 copies. @MovingShadowHQ

You can model a lightning strike by letting it solve a maze. If there is no connection, nothing happens. The air simply resists. If there is a connection, that path becomes the easiest route, so the discharge snaps through it.

Absolutely it has to be treated as a business, but passion isn't ruled out by doing that either - just accepting the extra potential maintenance/repair burden. But yeah, opening an arcade to a paying public isn't like inviting friends around for some games :D Arcade cabinets were originally in bars etc, so while they're vintage they're not super delicate either, and maybe you could have a separate food/drink zone? Like I mentioned before, I'm glad Cidercade figured it out, been there and it really is great to see rows of classic arcade machines. I think passion has to be part of it, but if it's paying its way and providing an income for maintenance and procurement, then it can be a win/win.

@TheDJFizz @yuzokoshiro I don't trust Americans with food and drink around my arcade cabs. The love is holding me back! I enjoy going to barcades and places like that, but they have to treat it like a business to make money rather than restoring because of love and passion. You get cheap repairs.

@hamstake_ @yuzokoshiro Pay to enter is definitely the way to go. I expect margins are made up by food & drink, and hosting events. We have a Cidercade here in Austin and it's great, I wish every city could have one, or something similar.

@yuzokoshiro The business of retro arcades is very difficult. You can't pay the rent and bills with coins anymore. In the USA, they have moved to a "pay to enter" model with machines on Freeplay mode. I've looked into this (I collect arcade cabs) margins are thin. Now I just enjoy home arcade

@dantemendes I played this in the arcade a few times back then, it was pretty good, but then I saw Star Wars... Still, for 1982 the graphics are very impressive with what looks like some cool Amiga Copper type of gradient effects.

Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom (Sega, 1982). Also known as ZOOM 909, an arcade shooter which had very advanced pseudo-3D visuals for 1982. It influenced Sega's own Space Harrier 3 years later, which in turn influenced Nintendo's Star Fox 11 years later. Many home ports, such as C64, Atari VCS and Atari 8-bit didn't feature the "trench run" stage. MSX, SG-1000 and ColecoVision retained it (where it's called ZOOM 909 and it's actually a more fair game without the surprise enemies from behind).

@CheekyC64Gamer Depends on which region of Europe, some stuck with tapes, or the C64 wasn't popular due to cheaper options such as the Amstrad. Also, tapes sucked for multi-load games, which definitely held back UK devs, but single load tape fastloaders were competing with disks for load times.

Bit of C64 truth… 🇬🇧 UK = tapes 📼 ⏳ Long loads, rewinds, praying it didn’t crash 😅 🇺🇸 US = disk drives 💾 ⚡ Loading in seconds Same machine… totally different experience 🕹️ (And yeah… some had cartridges 😏🎮) #C64 #Commodore64 #RetroGaming

@kylehalldetroit That would be finger grease. 😅 Though tbf, I have to admit that I've been hesitant to wash my old hardcore/jungle records (as part of ripping them to digital) as some have history from pirate etc.. Is it a type of patina, part of the history, or just dirty grooves? 🤔

Do second hand records carry spiritual residue? Should I purify my records or keepm funky?

@PixelCNinja Tis a great game that I always played when I saw it in the arcade back then. Shame the C64 port was so poor, however the Spectrum one, despite the lack of color really was a great conversion, and much closer in feel to the arcade version.

Bomb Jack by Tehkan looks simple, but its scoring system is genius. Grabbing bombs in the exact flashing sequence massively boosts points, turning a platformer into a high-risk optimisation puzzle. It also ran on hardware similar to Galaga, showing how much devs squeezed out of limited tech.

OUT RUN (Sega, 1986). Needs no introduction. Created by Yu Suzuki, its concept was based on The Cannonball Run film (w/ Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Roger Moore, etc.) - which he's a fan. Ended up being Sega's most successful arcade of the 80's and regarded as one of the greatest games ever. Fun fact: last year at our local retro expo (RetroSC), I heard someone asking if Out Run was "a clone of TOP GEAR for SNES". Context: Top Gear is huge in 🇧🇷 and synonym for retro racing game. Crazy, but it is what it is.

Sometimes it's the little touches in a game that make it special. For example, in FFED3D-AJ, the church clock tallies with the local system time on the screen. Then there's the mysterious blue/green power source on the side of an orbiting space station 😍 tinyurl.com/FFED3D
