50 years ago on Monday, the American Psychiatric Institute’s rank and file fended off an effort to overturn the APA board’s Dec. 15, 1973, decision to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder from the DSM. Fifty-eight percent voted to uphold the vote, I report for @NBCOUT.

Investigative journalists this year broke crucial stories about prisons and the legal system - climate crises, exploitation, surveillance, and more. Here’s an incomplete list of excellent reporting we read in 2023 on prisons and criminalization: 🧵

Three years ago, I got some footage that I couldn’t get out of my mind. It showed the first police killing captured on body-worn cameras in NY. The NYPD didn’t want anyone to see it. It eventually launched me on the biggest story I’ve ever done, w/ @NYTmag [THREAD]

It's notable that the CT Governor is trying to do this, especially after the embarrassing defeat that NY Gov. experienced with the state senate rejecting her nominee. The lack of judges who have spent any part of their career representing vulnerable people is a national scandal.
Connecticut Public@wnpr

Gov. Ned Lamont said he was confident Nora R. Dannehy would win confirmation for the Connecticut Supreme Court. However, some activists raised concerns that there are too many prosecutors on the state’s highest court. trib.al/AgzeV3m

@ASFleischman Did they have sex? Ongoing campaign to abolish or extend criminal and civil statutes of limitation in sex cases. Plaintiff lawyers and prosecutors like that but it throws off and unbalances justice, harder for people to get a fair shake when they're dragged into court.

Murder convictions OVERTURNED. "Kareem Mayo and Donnell Perkins spent over two decades behind bars for a murder they didn't commit. They were put away by a single witness who lied about his eyesight"
Ted Hamm@HammerDaily

Hi everyone, today I'm uploading the first 20 issues of New York Native newspaper scanned off microfiche to archive dot org. Probably NYC's premier gay newspaper in the '80s, they were first reporters on the AIDS crisis. You can find the first issue here: archive.org/details/1980-1…

Shocked! Many corporate media outlets "appear to be taken aback by the idea that the NY State Senate could actually exercise its constitutional power to reject a judicial nominee" #NoOnLaSalle fair.org/home/new-york-…

People on parole in Alabama have to pay a $40 monthly “supervision fee” to their parole officer or they can be revoked & sent back to prison. Will be doing more reporting on this in 2023.

@ProstasiaInc For anyone hit w/ criminal charges or civil suits related to sex, getting a fair shake in court is very difficult. Suspending or abolishing statutes of limitation, "believe the victim" bias & growing moral panic threaten justice. That's why insurance is an option to consider.

@Jay96851328 ACSOL uses bad judgment about posts to its website & social media. This arrest story is 'satire'--ACSOL failed to check the facts. ACSOL likes to run crime stories with mug shots, would you like to be treated that way? Vancouver Times, a source for satire: vancouvertimes.org/about-us/

DPIC will no longer be using middle names to identify exonerees, defendants, or prisoners unless one would also commonly use middle names in referring to politicians, athletes, entertainers, and limited-purpose public figures. @DPInfoCtr @AP @washingtonpost @nytimes @WSJ @latimes

A question for all my reporter friends—why do stories about capital defendants and death-row prisoners use middle names to identify them ("Eric Lamar Johnson" instead of "Eric Johnson")? It is part of a dehumanizing, othering process, like calling prisoners "inmates." @DPInfoCtr
