I deleted my previous post but I remain frustrated with the Church’s response to the current struggles young men face and it is a huge stumbling block for me.

Very rarely will you need to buy your husband a new wallet, but when that day comes, it is somehow a major household decision and you cannot screw it up.
Men will carry the same wallet for 20 years with the corners falling apart and still say it’s fine.
So this is not the moment for creativity. Slim, durable, leather if he’s a leather guy, metal if he already likes that kind of thing.
Do not surprise a man with a weird wallet.

I don't really get this, to me I feel closest to God when I'm full of joy. it honestly kind of confuses me

I think they THINK it's true.
When you're suffering, you're usually desperate. So you call upon God in a way that feels more profound than when you're not.
I think people confuse that with closeness, but it's actually something else.

your phone has hijacked your access to God and you’re wondering why you feel so dark. even 30m you couldn’t go uninterrupted doing the simplest activity. you forgot flow. you forgot how to couple. you forgot how to grapple and wrestle. when’s the last time you lost track of time? when’s the last time you finished a movie? no, actually? even leisure you’re no longer capable of. what an unserious existence. applies to me before it does to you by the way. no one’s exempt.

@Italian347 In Catholocism, we seek a "happy death", do we not? A fundamentally different thing than the pagan "good death".

A note on this. Counterintuitively, cultures that are obsessive about seeking "a good death" (usually a warrior's death) are the most terrified of death
Death is their God, a "bad death" (not just a dishonorable one, boring suffices) is an irredeemable sin

My 8 year old wanted to know why priests wear white for funerals. I said it represents the person going to Heaven.
She said “wouldn’t they want to wear black just in case”
