Today’s SCOTUS ruling is a betrayal of our basic democratic values as a country—turning back the clock on hard-won civil rights victories. This isn’t just about Louisiana; this will have nationwide impacts on Congressional districting and voter representation for generations.

My statement as @TheBlackCaucus Chair on the disastrous Supreme Court decision on Louisiana v. Callais. With the stroke of a pen, this rogue, unaccountable Court has effectively signed the death certificate of the Voting Rights Act, undoing decades of Black progress.

The CBC is willing to take any measure necessary to protect Black voters across the country from this extremist effort to diminish Black voices and access to fair representation. Our statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais:

Oregon has spent years building an election system that puts voters first, and I won't let Trump, the Supreme Court, or anyone else turn back that progress. Every voter has the right to a free, fair, and equal say in our democracy, and we must stand together to keep that promise.

This decision erases decades of progress, permits GOP racial gerrymandering, & trivializes the role the VRA has played to combat voter suppression of Black & brown communities. This won't stop us. Democrats will retake the House and restore equality & fairness to our government.

This Supreme Court decision is a generational setback for American democracy – one that threatens to drag us back to a dark time in our nation’s history. Not since Jim Crow have we seen this level of systemic disenfranchisement of Black voters. It’s despicable, and we will not sit back and allow the Court to further erode the hard-fought right to fair representation for Black Americans. Congress must pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to undo this harm and prevent future attempts to silence Black voters.

Today's SCOTUS ruling is a corrupt assault on the voting rights of Black and Brown Americans. Justice Kagan is right. Section 2 is now essentially a dead letter. Republicans want to gerrymander their way to power because they know it's their only way to win. We'll keep fighting fire with fire. The voters won't forget this.

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández
The Supreme Court just gave states the right to discriminate against Black, Latino, Native American, and Asian voters—to break their communities up among white districts under the guise of partisan gerrymandering. The Voting Rights Act (VRA) stood against a history of racial discrimination for decades—it was born out of the blood-stained Civil War, the civil rights movement, the sad history of our country, and its attempts to disenfranchise minority voters. The premise of the VRA was simple: protected minorities should have the opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice. It wasn’t a guarantee; it was just an opportunity. Today, the extreme Republicans on the Supreme Court gave racism the green light. They stripped our communities of that opportunity with a disgraceful decision that will make our elections less fair. Republicans and conservatives on the Supreme Court know they cannot win a free and fair election in November, so they are desperate to rig it by suppressing the vote.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais is a shameful abdication of duty that effectively legalizes racial discrimination under the mask of partisan politics. By allowing ‘partisan goals’ to serve as absolute defense for diluting minority voting power, the Court has provided a roadmap to systematically silence Black and Brown voices. As a member of the House Committee on Administration, I see this for what it is: a license for racism. We cannot allow political strategy to shield the intentional exclusion of communities of color from our democracy.

Today’s decision by SCOTUS undermines one of the last remaining tools that protected voters from racial discrimination in redistricting. Black, Latino, Native and other communities of color deserve to be fairly represented by elected officials who reflect their lived experiences.

Trump can’t handle the results of any election he might lose — that’s why he’s making it harder for every eligible American to vote. Democrats are trying even harder to defend our free and fair elections this November because the American people deserve no less.
