Palmer Luckey explains why science fiction is a great place to look for ideas “One of the things that I’ve realized in my career is that nothing I ever come up with will be new. I’ve literally never come up with an idea that a science fiction author has not come up with before.” Palmer continues: “It makes sense. There’s a lot of [science fiction authors]. They’ve been around for a long time. And they don’t have to make things. And they don’t have to wait for the right moment. I started Oculus at just the right moment for it to succeed. But a science fiction author doesn’t have to wait for something to be possible to think about it and to write about it and for people to be excited about the idea. And so every time I’ve come up with something, I’ve been able to find — usually many, sometimes one — science fiction pieces addressing literally exactly that idea by some guy who just thought about it like 50 years ago.” He gives a few examples: “Some of the stuff that I’m building today, for example, in the AR/VR space around augmenting the vision of soldiers — these are ideas that are from 1959 Starship Troopers novels. These are old ideas that have only recently become technologically feasible. The idea of autonomous fighter jets, that’s been around for about 100 years… people have been thinking about this since computers were programmed with punchcards.” So if you’re having a hard time thinking of startup ideas, try reading science fiction. 🧵May I say a few word to my European friends who now berate the US for allegedly “cozying up to Russia” and “abandoning Europe”? I’m sorry, but what was NordStream 1/2 about? What was the “Minsk process” after Russia invaded Georgia and seized Crimea? Where were you then? 1/5

So let’s get this straight—Ukraine, a not-too-wealthy country in Eastern Europe, has been fighting a total war for three years against a full-scale invasion by Russia—one of the largest armies in history, with one of the biggest military budgets, vast economic and human resources, and endless Soviet stockpiles. Despite receiving only limited, carefully rationed, and delayed aid from the West, Ukraine has inflicted a series of heavy defeats on Russia. It has forced Russia to spend months and years fighting for small provincial towns in the Donbas, destroyed 4,000 Russian tanks and around 8,000 IFVs/APCs, and exhausted even Russia’s once-bottomless Soviet reserves—so much so that Moscow is now buying weapons and ammunition from Iran and North Korea. Western systems like the Patriot have outperformed all expectations, delivering the best results in their operational history. Ukrainian drones have effectively neutralized the Russian Black Sea Fleet, while almost every night, Ukrainian strikes wipe out Russian oil depots and military factories. And after three years of total war, Russia—having failed to capture a single regional center or achieve a single one of its objectives—is now coming to the negotiation table. Yet somehow, there are still people claiming that Ukraine’s use of Western weapons is “ineffective” because its infantry sometimes fires NLAWs like RPGs. Seriously—you couldn’t make this up if you tried.

I just spoke with President @ZelenskyyUa. If President @realDonaldTrump can truly convince President Putin to stop the aggression against Ukraine, that is great news. Then, it will be the Ukrainians alone who can drive the discussions for a solid and lasting peace. We will help them in this endeavor. And we, Europeans, will need to strengthen our collective security and become more autonomous. France will fully play its role in accelerating this process. A stronger and more sovereign Europe, let's make it happen now. This is the call I made in the @FT.

Last night, a Russian attack drone with a high-explosive warhead struck the shelter protecting the world from radiation at the destroyed 4th power unit of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. This shelter was built by Ukraine together with other countries of Europe and the world, together with America – all those committed to real security for humanity. The only country in the world that attacks such sites, occupies nuclear power plants, and wages war without any regard for the consequences is today’s Russia. This is a terrorist threat to the entire world. The shelter at the Chornobyl NPP was damaged by this drone. The fire has been extinguished. As of now, radiation levels have not increased and are being constantly monitored. According to initial assessments, the damage to the shelter is significant. Every night, Russia carries out such attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure and cities. Russia continues to expand its army and shows no change in its deranged, anti-human state rhetoric. This means that Putin is definitely not preparing for negotiations — he is preparing to continue deceiving the world. That is why there must be unified pressure from all who value life – pressure on the aggressor. Russia must be held accountable for its actions.

Where were the sanctimonious DOJ resignations when the Biden DOJ sicced the FBI on parents at school board meetings? Or when Biden pardoned his entire family? This is pure politics.

In the 25 days since Trump’s inauguration, CNN has mentioned “egg prices” 45 times. But in the 25 days before the inauguration, CNN NEVER mentioned “egg prices.” Over on MSNBC, in the 25 days since Trump’s inauguration, they mentioned “edge prices” 80 times. But in the 25 days before the inauguration, MSNBC mentioned “egg prices” just 1 time. Beyond parody. (Count via TVEyes mentions.)

Banning the AP from White House events for not using “Gulf of America” is straight up 1984 government compelled speech. I thought this is what the right supposedly opposes?

This Gulf of America shit feels insane to me. I voted against compelled speech. This feels like punishing journalists for “deadnaming” the Gulf of Mexico. You can’t just rename a body of water and demand everyone go along with it and call us liars if we don’t. Nope. Miss me with that shit.
Acyn@Acyn

Leavitt on barring the AP: I was very up front in my briefing on day one that if we feel that there are lies being pushed by outlets in this room, we are going to hold those lies accountable. And it is a fact that the body of water off the coast of Louisiana is called the Gulf of America.

'No amount of discretionary cuts or anti-waste initiatives, no matter how worthy they are, will solve our long-term debt crisis. Ultimately, lasting reform must be legislated. President Donald Trump and Musk deserve credit for highlighting the debt crisis and taking action, but pretending that the job ends with them would be dangerous.' @veroderugy @reason reason.com/2025/02/13/dog… Chart: @JessicaBRiedl

Insane that "conservative" influencers now echo AOC and want presidents to just ignore court rulings rather than appeal them. You are not advocating for the conservation of our republic, but for a path that puts us heading toward its destruction.
Matt Walsh@MattWalshBlog

Ignore this disgusting freak. Judges don’t have the authority to tell the President which websites he has to have up. Judges are completely out of control in this country. They think they have the power to control literally every aspect of the government with the wave of a hand.

There are real problems with the ideology around DEI. But this is a reminder that to some people "DEI" just means "anything with black people." No one is oppressed because the halftime show was cast with black performers. People need to stop being such delicate snowflakes.
