Unreliable energy advocates claim solar panels and battery storage are now able to deliver "baseload" power at a lower cost than coal or nuclear. But we ran the numbers in ERCOT, and solar and storage aren't low cost, they are the most expensive energy out there. A thread:

If the wind and solar industries "don't need the tax credits," why did they lobby so fiercely to keep them?

What a difference a year makes. Major wind/solar developers have now come out in FAVOR of phasing out federal subsidies - Simpler financing environment, less political headaches - Cyprus Creek CEO: reintroducing tax credits not good for the industry - Green Street Power: we'd all be better off without tax credits, points to European environment - Opportunities for more efficiency in EPC, supply chain - 45X still valuable for spurring domestic manufacturing and should be carried on

Allow data centers but only if 20% of the GPUs are set aside as “affordable” compute for low-income agents.

95% of the YoY energy price increases was the week of winter storm Fern according to the report they cite. I'm disturbed to learn data centers caused winter storm Fern. Interestingly, peak demand in Q1 of '26 was LOWER than '25.

Power prices on the largest US grid jumped 76% in the first quarter as data center demand surged, increasing pressure on the operator to ease consumer strain bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Right. Here's a new paper from ESIG/Brattle with a great graphic to cut against simplistic narratives of data centers always increasing/reducing rates for existing customers. TL;DR - it depends. For e.g. your rates can go UP if your utility has not fully hedged. Just ask some ratepayers in PJM! As the paper put it: "The rate impact of large loads is not a foregone conclusion in either direction. It is an empirical question that depends on the specific conditions of the utility system, prevailing market dynamics, market design, regulatory framework, and rate design."

@TheFrackingGuy True but also maybe the nuclear industry should’ve cashed more checks back in the 70s

Anyone else noticing that a lot of consultant types are parroting the exact same arguments in favor of data centers? I’m not commenting on the validity of the points, it just feels obvious that some checks were cashed.

I have no idea why some people keep repeating "batteries will eat gas" as if the battery owners were all on one team that share revenue as opposed to independent investments all trying to max their own returns. In this context batteries are MUCH more able to eat their own returns before they start cutting into gas. And outside of California there probably isn't an unlimited appetite to keep subsidizing the "free" fuel for them to charge from.
Darth Trader@ISOTraderGeorge

Batteries have been tremendously successful in accelerating the race to zero on revenue...which also makes for a horrible business model. A significant number of batteries are going to make more money for their 2nd owners when they're sold for pennies on the dollar after some companies get liquidated in the next 3-5 years.

@MayorFrey I would humbly suggest you restore the parking spaces throughout Uptown that were converted to seldomly-used bike lanes.
