As we depart this dumpster fire for BlueSky (@ TheGlazeProject.bsky.social), I will leave this article pinned here. This is the definitive article of who we are, how we got here, and why we do what we do.

Meet @TheGlazeProject, the AI lab behind Glaze and Nightshade, two prominent weapons in an artist’s arsenal against nonconsensual AI scraping. The lab wants to tilt the balance of power from Big Tech back to individual creators. But are their tools enough?technologyreview.com/2024/11/13/110…

@HashyaHan It's always the "I heard from someone that ..." misinformation campaign. "Using LORAs" sounds technical, until you realize that's what Glaze disrupts. So that is the same as saying Glaze doesn't work. Except the research papers (including those trying to attack Glaze) disagree.

@HashyaHan lol. Glaze specifically targets LORA training. So no, you can't use LORAs to get around Glaze. Nightshade is designed to affect whole model training, so again, using fine tuning to "get around" model tuning is nonsensical. Like saying you're fixing a car by walking.

@TheGlazeProject I wonder if you guys have something prepared for this, assuming you all already knew about it: People using LoRA to work around Glaze & Nightshade.

Hi all. Hope you’re all voting in this critical election. Officially writing to say that moving forward, we will not be checking twitter or posting news here. It is too much of a dumpster fire. Join us in bsky or IG. We are also working on new invite system for webglaze.

@draconia_game Not yet but we’re trying to build a secure system that is much faster to process invites than our current approach. We still have so many requests stalled here

The internet has been progressively diluted with AI-generated slop. Are medical records headed for the same fate? 🧵 I just published a perspective in @NEJM with @AdamRodmanMD and Arjun Manrai on why rushing AI into medical documentation could be a mistake.

Google is calling for UK copyright law to be changed to allow training AI models on copyrighted work without the need for a license. All British creators should oppose this. The creative industries account for 5% of UK GDP. Let's not destroy them by allowing AI companies to train highly scalable AI competitors on creators' work without permission. theguardian.com/technology/202…

@Rahll Before someone chimes in “but you can create more efficient code!” No you can’t. Assembly literally operates at machine level, moving data betw memory, registers and I/O, limited by physics. Compiled assembly is just binary bits. No fantasies here of machine talking to machine.

@Rahll 🤣 The funniest part is that his question demonstrates how little he actually understands code. We have "hyper efficient code" that is illegible to humans. It's called assembly code or machine code, and it's what legible code compiles down to. Literally year 1 intro to CS.

Why are people still acting like AI is magic? It's like when the Segway came out and they said, "Just think forward, and it goes forward!" and people lost their minds. Now only tourists and mall cops use them, and we all point and laugh.

@SketchesbyBoze Amazing that you had Mallory’s Le Morte d’Arthur on your list. I read that in many years ago when I was diving into old legends, and have rarely/never seen it mentioned in public discussions of literature.

… and a few books that might make the list if you ask me tomorrow: Les Mis, The Man Who Was Thursday, The Mahabharata, The Count of Monte Cristo, any Poirot, Fahrenheit 451, Borges’ Ficciones, Gormenghast, War & Peace, Little Women. Happy reading!

Today I wanted to do something a bit different and recommend my ten FAVORITE books, the books that I shove into the hands of strangers, the books I think everyone should know the joy of reading at least once.

Next time a generative AI company tells you training on people's work without permission is good for creators, show them this poll. It's a poll of 4,274 songwriters, composers, and publishers in Australia & New Zealand, conducted in June 2024. And it shows how strong the feelings in the creative community are about this: - 95% assert ©️ holders must be asked permission before training - 93% say ©️ holders must be paid for training - 96% want training data transparency requirements - 93% want AI output to be labelled - 82% are concerned AI music could stop musicians making a living The idea that unlicensed, uncompensated training is somehow good for creators is a myth. Call me crazy but I want a society where everyone from the artist to the janitor is paid a living wage, where careers and creative hobbies aren’t being stolen by machines, where books and music and learning are celebrated instead of demeaned.

Sadly no. We remain overwhelmed and most requests for webglaze accounts sit unanswered. Unfortunately my plans for student helpers did not work out. Students disappear during summer & have too many other commitments in general. We're trying to design & build a better alternative
