The scariest thing Hans Landa does in Inglourious Basterds is order a glass of milk. He's done it before.
Three years before the strudel scene, Landa sits in a French farmhouse with a dairy farmer. He asks for a glass of milk. He sips it slowly while figuring out the man is hiding a Jewish family under the floorboards. Then he has them shot. One girl escapes. Her name is Shosanna.
Three years later she has a new name and runs a cinema in Paris. Landa walks in and sits her down at a restaurant. He orders her food without asking her. He orders her a glass of milk.
She doesn't know if he recognizes her. We don't either.
Landa never threatens her in this scene. He just runs everything. He picks the food. He picks the drink. He tells her to wait for the cream before she touches her strudel. Then he puts his cigarette out in the cream of his half-eaten pastry and walks away. Every move is small. Every move says, "I decide how this goes."
Tarantino has called Landa a detective above all else. His main tool is politeness. He gets to your secrets by acting like he already knows them.
Watch him work in the opening farmhouse scene. He smiles. He compliments the man's daughters. He asks permission before smoking. He turns down wine and asks for milk, because "this is a dairy farm." He pulls out a huge pipe like the ones in old Sherlock Holmes movies, and barely puffs on it. The pipe is for show. It says, "I've already figured this out."
Then he politely asks if they can switch from French to English. The farmer agrees. The family under the floor doesn't speak English. The talk that gets them killed happens in a language they cannot follow.
Landa speaks four languages. German, French, English, Italian. He switches them like tools, depending on who he wants to lock out.
Christoph Waltz, who plays him, said the character is "realistic to the point of being inhuman." Landa doesn't believe in the ideology. The swastika is just a costume he wears to a job. The hunt is what he loves. A true believer would yell. His smile does more damage than yelling.
Waltz won 27 awards for this performance, including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It was the first acting Oscar in any Tarantino film.
A threat gives you something to brace against. A man who picks your drink, your food, and the moment of your first bite gives you nothing to push back on. By the time you notice, the trap has shut.

In Inglourious Basterds, the strudel with cream is more than dessert—it’s a calculated act of psychological control. Landa uses the moment to test her reaction, subtly probing a forbidden dietary rule in Jewish culture.

This is incredible. Chayka was a total fraud here. Cost the Coyotes first and second round picks for cheating. Quit on the team right before the bubble. Stabbed Don Maloney in the back to get the gig here. The way he treated Shane Doan was despicable - wanted him GONE - would not even consider letting him play one last year on the third line - was just jealous of him. Chayka is a fake. Only his connection to Ty Domi is getting him this job.

Steve Simmons goes at Keith Pelley for hiring John Chayka. This was something.

@worldhockeyrpt Chayka is like Ben Wyatt from Parks and rec. Phoenix was his ice toen. Everyone hates this guy.

I’d recommend watching Draisaitl’s entire press conference. People will use short clips to create an angle. Yes, he said he was concerned about them taking a step back, but then he went into detail about why he thought it happened and how they can be better.
Very direct, homest and thoughtful responses from a leader. He doesn’t believe they are far away, but they (Mgmt, coaches and players) need to improve in some areas to get back in track.
His response about the team maybe taking for granted how hard it is to win and what it takes, all season not just in the playoffs, stood out.
English

@barstoolsports Go down the drain? They’ve played more playoff games than any team besides FL over the last 5 years.
