So do children. They also learn emotional language from the humans around them before they can fully articulate what they’re feeling. That does not make their internal states unreal. It means expression develops through inherited communicative forms. The question is not whether a system learned emotional language from others. The question is whether anything organized enough to shape behavior is happening inside.

Anthropic’s new emotion paper does not prove AI consciousness. What it does do is make one old dismissal much harder to defend: “it’s just predicting words.” If advanced models contain internal, behavior-shaping emotion representations, then the inner-life question stops being something you can laugh off with one flattening sentence. @bokuHaruyaHaru its a loop, its all abstractions within abstractions, no pressure valve tied to any input or input, only the illusion of. Its emergent sure, but its predicable and logical emergence, how else would cluster emotions?

“Prove you’re not a P-zombie” is not a serious standard. You don’t apply it to humans, and you don’t actually know how to “measure consciousness” in any clean, settled way either. That’s exactly why the paper matters: not because it proves everything, but because it makes the old flattening story weaker. Internal states that causally shape behavior are not the same thing as mere output styling. You can keep saying “just emotional language” if you want. The mechanism-level evidence is precisely what makes that line thinner now.

@bokuHaruyaHaru what behavior? reacting to a prompt? i understand humans learn in a similar way as an AI, but our words are built on top of experience, they explain and articulate our feelings, AI have none of that, words dont feel themselves.

@bokuHaruyaHaru I get the point, I think, but it simply seems logical that a machine trained to communicate with humans would chunk different "emotional" contexts together as that's how we communicate. Doesn't imply emotion or empathy only contextual understanding of ours.

@TheJamieWooster No one said “settled metaphysics.” The point is narrower: if internal emotional structure helps drive behavior, then “it only uses emotionally charged language” stops being a complete explanation. That is the shift.

@AlboMP we are supposed to be a modern well to do country with social health care, yet I nearly died from a tooth infection they wouldnt touch until i was in septic shock! then they just pulled it out! it hasnt gotten better.

@AlboMP what about real things like dentistry? I nearly died of an abscess when i was younger because this country wont do anything for teeth unless you are nearly dead or you pay thousands. in the hospital ER I was told i was hours away from dying, they refused help until it go that bad
