@TheKitschist I can really see the potential in your brand. But having a functional website would make a big difference.... I'd love to help if you're planning to get one

Honest question: Can readers really detect a writer’s nationality? If I gave you a novel with no author name attached, would you know whether it was written by an American, a Russian, or an Asian writer? Or are we all just telling human stories in different accents?

@TheKitschist If they write in patois like Zora Neale Hurston did it's a bit of a give away. The classic Russians you could probably pick out because of their plodding snowy miserableness 😆

@TheKitschist It depends if I can pick up the societal and cultural cues that are shown or written about. Like for example, with my Filipino culture, the younger generation often take the hand of an elder and ask them for a blessing, and we use honorifics like kuya (big brother).

I would be able to tell by what they focus on, but it wouldn't be super accurate. At the most I could tell the difference between French and German writers, but not Irish vs English. Thai vs Chinese is an interesting distinction, since you'd think they would be similar.

@BroJoeChiRho You can easily tell with something like the Japanese, though. If they devote a couple pages to telling you how much the character enjoys eating cucumber with soy sauce, they're probably Japanese. Or if they call Boy George a fat gay boy who can't sing.

Russians are depressing in immense detail. Frenchmen are frivolously depressing or miserable with more adultery. British used to be witty. No idea if they’re allowed to be witty anymore. Americans are either greatly optimistic and inventive or bad copies of Frenchmen.

I keep reading comments from colleagues to the effect that, if a work is good, why should it matter whether that work was produced by a human or by a machine? Let the words speak for themselves!

@TheKitschist We tell the same human stories, but our layouts are different. Western books focus on a three-act conflict framework. East Asian traditions like Kishōtenketsu focus on an unexpected twist without using a central antagonist. The plot blueprint is the giveaway.

@TheKitschist @EmmaRSotomayor Have you read modern French, especially by women, books? I am a Finn and reading those makes me short of breath...so intense. I think the national 'vibe' comes through sometimes. Americans ( Steinbeck for instance) writes about surviving so beautifully.

i can detect it if I'm familiar with the country's culture of that author so i won't be able to detect every nationalities. i remember my experience in this situation but on a wattpad novel and i don't remember the title anymore. i could guess the author is from india because of how they wrote about "one night stand" being a very taboo incident. in that plot, the parents actually caught the main leads accidentally having ons in a club but actually they're being framed by a villain. they all gone hella mad and with over exaggerated reactions from the characters in that story and the "villain" in question stirring things up on the spot😭 those are exactly how an India's drama would look like. and makes it even funnier is the fact that the author actually wrote it as a story happening in south korea😭 I'm not indian, i just oftenly saw videos of India's tv drama i know how over dramatic the scenes on those shows are and how the characters will behaves in such circumstances is exactly like that😭
