Very well said, @NickJFreitas.
I struggled for years to overcome my insecurities, to take some risks, & accept failure as a necessary part of growing up.
Take it from me, guys— you do NOT want to find yourself 40+ years old, realizing that you have very little life experience besides beer & video games, with very few useful life skills. I coped with my insecurities for years by running away from obligation & responsibility but life WILL catch up with you, at which point you’ll have to learn to adapt somehow with what little skills & experience you have. And it’s TOUGH, man! You feel lost in the wilderness.
I would encourage young men out there to embrace responsibility at a young age. Develop a vision, don’t make mistakes being foolish but make plenty of mistakes being ambitious & LEARN from them.
Learn to be useful to others. That will help you find a partner & prepare you for meaningful relationships. Get married, have kids. That will teach you humility & patience & resilience. Be independent, set some goals & go for them in earnest. Don’t daydream your life away. Don’t fantasize about what you could be if only the conditions were right & instead do everything you can to be someone admirable & achieve something. Don’t be bitter or blame others. Act like your family’s name & reputation mean something to you because they should.
And for God’s sake, don’t be afraid to ask questions & hurt some feelings.
