🔥🔥🔥Important work in @JAMANetworkOpen! We found inpatients with ASB rarely had bacteremia--pts w/altered mental status and NO systemic signs of infection had <<1% risk. Really drives home that work up of other causes of altered mentation is key, rather than anchoring on UTI

‼️New in @JAMANetworkOpen w @HMS_MI: Risk of bacteremia in hospitalized adults with #ASB Key findings: In patients with #ASB, bacteremia from a presumed urinary source was rare: ~1.4% overall <1% in #AMS <1% in #AMS + #dementia ~3% if signs of sepsis 📰:jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman…

Great work @Ascensionorg . The structured multidisciplinary work with the patient at its center, the hardwiring of highly reliable processes in our clinical care, and using actionable data to continuously improve have led to enhanced patient outcomes.

Great work @Ascensionorg led by Drs Mupanomunda and Masoudi evaluating Severe Maternal Morbidities Associated With Specific SARS-CoV-2 Variants. All variants increase risk, particularly delta. Underscores the importance of vaccination to this population ja.ma/3C9vSvH

The updated CLABSI recommendations categorize interventions as essential (to be implemented) and additional (for specific populations or if not reaching goal). It also details process and outcome measures to evaluate progress to reach goals @ICHEJournal bit.ly/3s19IGr

Great article addressing freeing up processes from barriers or elements that impede adoption. The concrete examples reflect the importance of process evaluation and strong impact that removing #sludge removal has on outcomes. @miteshspatel @BYehia @Ascensionorg

Important data on hospital onset blood stream infections (HOBSI) in the #COVID19 pandemic. COVID-19 infected: higher invasive bloodstream infections, underscoring their risk and severity of illness. HOBSI is electronically captured, and sensitive to changes in population.

For the future, a key element to reduce transmission of pathogens is to engineer settings that lower transmission risk rather than rely on population compliance with masking/testing. Most transmission occurs in closed places; it costs us more and affects energy efficiency.

Testing is important, but with upcoming Omicron and high infectivity rates, we may want to focus on measures providing the highest ROI with the least disruption. Optimized ventilation, vaccination, and universal masking in public areas.

#COVID19 cases continue to average 100-150k/ day. Our vaccination rate is increasing though not optimal. 54% of those >65 years of age had boosters. My fear is that we are still using testing as the "logical" process to address COVID19, but the virus is adjusting faster than us.
