@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate They might repeat those task in a second colour after exploring the topic more and notice whether they have changed their views on anything. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. So no judgement just a chance to position, reflect and reflex.

@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate On this chat people have talked about a snowflake task. Children respond to a series of statements, reflecting on how much they disagree or agree with it. They then compare there answers to someone else’s.

Q1: What do you understand by the term personal knowledge? #REChatUK

@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate I think we want to create space for all children to reflect on their own beliefs but not evaluate them as such. Beliefs naturally evolve over time based on all experiences someone has. Beliefs are not static. Hopefully it will empower them to feel more confident in themselves

@TheREPodcast1 @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate So it has nothing to do with getting a child to evaluate their own religious beliefs then. It’s all about helping you understand other people better. Then what’s it got to do with a personal worldview?

@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate I don’t think it is different. I think part of it is to correct misconceptions about others, and look at unhelpful simplifications and generalisations

@TheREPodcast1 @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate So how is this different from helping students understand how the religious tradition in which they were raised may lead to them making assumptions about the faiths of others that might not be quite accurate?

@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate I think it’s more about exploring what they are & unpacking their lived reality rather than justifying them. Part of the worldviews approach to RE is recognising authentic lived experiences and that we don’t all fit neatly into boxes and helping students feel ok with diversity

@TheREPodcast1 @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate #rechatuk So how, in a classroom, do you communicate to children that religious beliefs don't require justification? How do you do that when you are also asking children to evaluate them? It seems contradictory.

@TheREPodcast1 @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate #Rechatuk I get you say that, but the thing is that from a Jewish point of view, our connection to Judaism isn't a worldview at all. It also isn't personal. It's not what I believe is true. It is intrinsically communal and based on connection with family.

@shirabatya @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate I get this. Personal worldviews is where the academic study of worldviews meets personal beliefs and that can sometimes be a bit tricky to navigate. But respectful dialogue is part of what’s needed to celebrate diversity and build tolerance. REChatUK

@TheREPodcast1 @josephkinnaird @NATREupdate #REChatUK Also how is there room here for the idea that a person's commitment to their faith is not a claim that needs to be evaluated. But rather as something we share to be understood by others and accepted as it is (but not agreed with or disagreed with).
