‘The students who choose for reading and imitation the best authors in each field of study are wiser and do their work far more good than those others who slight these authors and without taste or discrimination take up anyone they please.’ Cypriano de Soarez (1562)

New article from E. D. Hirsch and me on (1) the evidence for the importance of knowledge in reading; (2) why it’s taken so long for people to acknowledge the evidence; (3) what we predict if the role of knowledge is taken seriously. educationnext.org/rediscovering-…

Brilliant news that our RCT looking at whether same-language subtitles improve children’s reading fluency was accepted. Mammoth effort involving a great deal of help from families and schools, and I’m so pleased for lead author @a_lopukhina who brought it all together. 👏

Students don't struggle to write well because they lack talent or effort but because we demand essays before they've mastered sentences. My new book, Writing Fitness sets out a different model: gapless instruction, success before struggle, deliberate practice and writing embedded in the curriculum. Also, details of Australian workshop dates this March Link below...

Somehow it was learning how many people are fulltime employed to maintain the Golden Gate Bridge that flipped something inside of me in my understanding of the entropic force civilization has to constantly fight against. Before that moment I thought — I had not applied real conscious thought — you simply build a building or anything really and then you just … have it. After that I understood everything is constantly at the brink of being lost.

"X hasn't got this kid decoding well, so let's try Y" is the thought process of a school that doesn't really understand what it's doing. >>

We love to say we’re building a ‘love of reading’. The evidence suggests we’re doing no such thing. Pleasure doesn’t lead to fluent reading; fluency makes pleasure possible. Reading for pleasure should be an outcome, not a curricular aim. Trying to teach enjoyment is missing the point. Link below...

NAPLAN is not the only education story in town. CESE has just published another set of What Works Best resources! Check out the practical guides on effective feedback and high expectations, and the illustrations of practice featuring Cabramatta High School and Coonamble Public School. (Links👇). They will make your day. Great article on Cabramatta High in the Daily Tele too (and yes, they also nailed NAPLAN).

This has been annoying me a lot but I couldn't really express why. Then a friend said "it's because it takes enjoyment as an input, not an output". And that's it: enjoying a subject is a long-term entitlement, not a method. Sometimes important things are not enjoyable.
