I've added some updates to our 3D Graphics course, including: • Pineda-style algorithm • Fill rules (top-left) • Optimizations (just a few adds per pixel) • Fixed-point rasterization • Subpixel rendering • Mouse camera control • Discussion on EGA & VGA modes • OBJ quads

@IroncladDev Not something most will go for honestly. But I run my own IRC/XMPP servers. Slowly building out and moving the community over there.

I enjoyed Linux greatly in the 00s.. Sure it had problems we don't have today but overall things were far more consistent and the community was very big on modification. Now we have the lovely X11 vs Wayland debacle, all of Gnome dictating how applications look. I use FVWM3 and GTK applications are the absolute worst to get looking decent. The most egregious issue by far is the double titlebars because of how some GTK4 applications are. Thankfully Gajim for example does allow you to turn off the titlebar allow X11's native to function properly. I would love to go back to that time again and live there forever. Mass Effect 2 also hadn't of come out yet and introduced the idea of DLC already on disc that you had to pay for yet either. Food for thought on that.

Spyro The Dragon came out in 1998 for the PS1. Selling nearly 5 million copies worldwide creating an impressive franchise for the Playstation. I remember renting this with my dad from Blockbuster! Anyone else remember this classic? #PS1 #PSX #Retro

@pikuma They really are! They should go make their own Databases in <X> language rather than trying to convert a project. I never liked converting projects starting from scratch I've found is always best.

@pikuma I sometimes make my own or even grab old texture cd's to use as tiled wallpapers. Even has that really old low quality jpeg compression artifacts. I also sometimes use my own raytracer to make wallpapers as included in this message.

I try not to say anything anymore because most people that don't know me well enough just assume I'm "being biased" or that "it's in my best interest to criticize the book", but I have to agree. I had really expectations for this book and I felt let down.
Farenain@Farenain

Although I'm reading it, and doing the C compiler in C++, I have to say that "Writing a C Compiler" is a horrible book where no explanations are given, and mostly all the content from the chapters are the AST definitions.

Someone linked this to me and I found your posts about software rendering to be rather interesting. I'm a huge fan of software rendering due to how timeless it can be. Typically games that are software rendered still work to this very day. I have been working on my own software renderer that uses AVX2 optimizations I've written by hand and the performance is pretty decent. Currently working on AVX-512 now that I finally have a CPU that can do AVX-512. Found this when it was posted nearly 2 years ago. This is all "high end" effects like PBR, ray marching etc.. All very expensive things that I have no interest in. My end goal for my software renderer is to be capable of doing mid 00s style visuals. Which are dramatically cheaper than PBR methods. youtube.com/watch?v=jF3BAP… I did experiment with creating a software renderer using GPU compute shaders but honestly went back to CPU as I found it more fun. GPU compute shaders are fun in their own right but I enjoy compiling for platforms like HaikuOS and seeing it work the same as it does on Linux.

@pikuma I have a fun inverse problem. I put a bunch of ram in my DOS machine to help with renders using 3D Studio.. Now certain games/installers complain I don't have memory and instead have negative memory. DOS really is the best OS frankly.
