I see folks are pledging not to use AI in their writing. I pledge the opposite: I will use the latest LLMs, and for that matter any other tool, to best improve my research or the way I communicate it. That way, if my name is on it, you can be sure it reflects my own best judgment

At SXSW Edu and it’s a steady stream of micro credentials, workforce training, future ready gibberish. No event has acknowledged AI agents exist or how agentic tools call into question the validity of certifying anything digitally right now. People have ignored AI developments.

@twlvone @PerellClips Exactly. The mentioned “prompt” is vague and as a result, the result is unimpressive. Summarize critically? Summarize unconventionally? The quality of what you receive is positional to the quality of what you enter in the first place.

he's describing taste. and he's right that AI doesn't have his taste. but the move isn't "summarize the book FOR me" - it's "read the book, then have a conversation about it with AI that surfaces angles I wouldn't have found alone." the tool is a thinking partner not a replacement for thinking. most people just use it wrong

Ezra Klein: "Having AI summarize a book or paper for me is a disaster. It has no idea what I really wanted to know and wouldn't have made the connections I would've made. I'm interested in the thing I will see that other people wouldn't have seen, and I think AI typically sees what everybody else would see. I'm not saying that AI can't be useful, but I'm pretty against shortcuts. And obviously, you have to limit the amount of work you're doing. You can't read literally everything. But in some ways, I think it's more dangerous to think you've read something that you haven't than to not read it at all. I think the time you spend with things is pretty important." @ezraklein
Paul Novosad@paulnovosad

From Ezra Klein, more true than ever. You would not believe how many shortcuts everyone else is taking. In many areas, you can get way ahead of everyone just by doing the work. More true than ever now, when more people are shirking and AI lets you do 10x if you try. 1/

The technology & buildings change, but the passion for teaching never does. These future teachers had a great visit to the Plymouth schoolhouse on campus. #TigerTeacherNation

Are we shocked? Saddened? Numbed? We are all screen junkies as proof reading this now. We all might say that we value embodied experiences then find ourselves taking 126 selfies on a nature hike and spending hours to curate just the right one to share.

It seems like there is not enough of a policy response to the fact that, with 57M miles of data, Waymo’s autonomous vehicles experience 85% less serious injuries & 79% less injuries overall than cars with human drivers. 2.4 million are injured & 40k killed in US accidents a year

I really hope folks wake up and understand how far generative AI has gone beyond ChatGPT. This is technology your students are using regardless of your course policy on AI. Talk to your students about it. Please.
