Budget: $4.5 million. Gross: $45.4 million. He wrote it with no studio deal, no notes, no permission. A 10x return bought him something rare in Hollywood: leverage. Weapons proved it wasn't a fluke. Warner Bros won a bidding war for the script, spent $38 million, and got $269 million back plus an Oscar for Amy Madigan. Two swings, two hits, at a combined budget smaller than one Marvel movie's marketing spend. So when Resident Evil came around, the power dynamic had fully inverted. Cregger told the rights holders he refused to adapt any specific game. He'd only write an original story in their world. Four studios bid anyway. Sony won and handed him $80 million. The same industry that labeled him the worst director of 2009 now pays a premium for the one thing it claims audiences don't want: an original story. Jordan Peele ran this exact route, sketch comedy to horror auteur. The pipeline nobody designed keeps producing the directors everybody wants.
