the right kind of irreversible
i made this piece before i wrote a single word about the beaks
it started with a human face beside a beak, both letting out the same colored threads. i wasn’t trying to make some deep statement at first. while drawing it, the connection slowly started making sense to me on its own.
that’s probably why dima kashtalyan’s work hit me so hard since i have been looking into it.
some artists show you things you already felt but never had words for.
one thing i keep thinking about is how stippling and blockchain both deal with permanence. once a dot is placed, it stays there. same with something written onchain. there’s no real undo button. you keep going and make the next decision work with the last one.
i think that’s what makes dima’s work feel different to me.
he’s been working with that kind of pressure since 2005. every image built slowly, dot by dot, with patience most people probably don’t have anymore lol. if something goes wrong, you don’t erase it. you adapt to it.
after years of doing that, the mistakes become part of the texture.
that’s also why the MIT technology review commission made sense to me. they asked him to illustrate a story about protecting artists from AI scraping, and honestly, his work represents the opposite of disposable image generation. you can feel the time inside it.
every dot feels earned.
the beaks being 1,111 pieces also makes more sense to me now. it doesn’t feel like a random supply number. it feels like a limit chosen to protect the quality of the work instead of stretching it into mass production.
and the live drawing on may 5 made me respect it even more. no big reveal, no hiding the process. just dima drawing in real time, letting people watch the work happen slowly.
that mattered to me.
the more i looked at my own piece again, the more i realized why i connected to the project in the first place. the threads coming from both the human and the beak feel like the same release. like both figures are carrying something internal and finally letting it leave.
i didn’t plan all of that consciously when i started drawing, but maybe that’s the point.
the beaks don’t feel like characters to me anymore. they feel more like proof of intention. proof that time, patience, and human decisions still leave marks you can’t really fake.

I was at a supermarket yesterday.
A man who came in before me was about to pay for his things.
Total bill: ₦92,600.
He tapped his card. Declined.
He tried again, error message that says.
“Issuer inoperative.”
But the ₦92,600 had already left his account.
The supermarket POS didn’t receive any credit alert.
The manager said,
“Sir, we can’t let you go with the items until we see the payment.”
The man showed them his banking app and said,
“I have been debited already. Do I look like I’m here to steal bread?”
Still, they refused.
The man just stood there looking frustrated.
You could clearly tell he wasn’t a small person.
After some minutes, he walked to his car and said he would come back later.
Where do people’s money stay after leaving their account because this same thing happened to me before.
₦38k hung during payment in the market, and it took 37 days of back and forth with the bank before I got reversed.
Now I’m thinking… What happens if that was their last money?
What if they needed it to eat or survive for the week?
Why does the Nigerian banking system hang people’s money for so long without considering if that’s all they have to survive on?
