@utacult You're missing the point of the night shift. Everyone there (except maybe Abbot) is used to add a bit of levity to the end of a stressful season. The writers could definitely flesh them out, but you'd lose that levity in the process. They need to be simple to fit their role

People saying "the night shift doesn't have enough substance to carry an entire season" are so funny bc that's what writers are for. Their whole jobs are flesh out characters and make storylines for them.
