It was on September 1st of this year that I picked up this rusty metal spike and asked a family friend if I could show and tell with my students. It's length at 12 inches, and it's thick, magnetic rust (magnetite) had me intrigued to figure out the #History with my students.

@The_Littlefield @stephenehorn The war wouldn't have even happened if Lincoln had admitted that the south had a right to secede. They wanted to negotiate and leave on good terms, he made that impossible.

@TexanChud @stephenehorn The south relied heavily upon conscripted youths. Forcing teenagers that wouldn't even be able to drive to go and die in a Rich Mans War. Carpetbaggers wore grey too.

@The_Littlefield @drantbradley For sure, thanks for pointing that out. Most of the fostering parents I know are working through stuff like this with the kids that came out of terrible situations. Super hard, they certainly deserve our compassion.

@CatoInstitute @David_J_Bier @CatoInstitute A $1.7T fiscal "surplus" (1994–2023) leaves out the $1.5–2.2 TRILLION in taxpayer costs for their kids’ public schools + Medicaid for their U.S.-born children over the exact same period. A massive net drain on state & local taxpayers. Broken window fallacy.

Palestinians under Egyptian rule were treated like trash, Palestinians under the PLO rule were treated like trash and Palestinians under Hamas rule were treated like trash. Israel gave Palestinians a chance at the best life possible from 2005-Oct 7, 2023, and the Axis of Evil - all in the name of "resistance" for the Palestinians - showed us how the Palestinians were just their involuntary martyrs all along.

Israel is back in control of southern Lebanon 26 years after it left in 2000, just as Israel is back in control of the Gaza Strip 21 years after it left it in 2005. This control, military occupation, or whatever you want to call it, is the direct result of irresponsible and criminal decisions made by Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists who failed to leverage newly acquired freedom and territories in pursuit of nation-building, sustainable futures, and peace. “Resistance” was not only a slogan, but it became an industrial complex, with money, narratives, propaganda, foreign interference, and terror infrastructure. Even if you believe in resistance, that should have stopped in Lebanon after 2000, and it should have stopped in Gaza after 2005 – the whole point of resistance is to no longer live under a direct military occupation. What kind of pathetic, ill-conceived, unintelligent, and moronic resistance invites the occupation back into one’s country decades later, causing complete and utter devastation? This is further proof that Hezbollah and Hamas, while made up of and endorsed by many in Lebanon and Palestine, were never truly organic to their respective societies and only existed as tools for foreign agendas, masters, and enablers.

Youve basically shared a map of where non English Speakers live. Ignore Mississippi. It does not discredit the main crux of my argument. Side theory: Heat and sun exposure literally makes you stupid. All the native born Yankees tend to live in the Southeast, anyway. NY is full of Americans and migrants from hot parts of the world.

@drantbradley It is of course true that illiterate parents are not capable to teach, because reading is fundamental to all book-learning. But to assume that government schools effectively teach reading is set against a growing body of evidence they do not.

@MarioNawfal Hezbollah is not Lebanon's most capable fighting force. They are an occupying force and extension of the IRGC . They do not represent Lebanon and never have. They are a non state actor by definition. They are terrorists.

🇱🇧🇮🇱 Hezbollah's leader just laid out five conditions that reveal why this ceasefire may not survive... Naim Qassem says Hezbollah is "fully open" to cooperating with the Lebanese government. That's a notable shift. But his five conditions for extending the peace with Israel include the "permanent cessation" of Israeli strikes and complete Israeli troop withdrawal from Lebanon. Here's the problem. Israel has signaled it plans to occupy much of southern Lebanon even after the war ends. The 10-day ceasefire doesn't require withdrawal. And Qassem explicitly said Hezbollah will keep its fighters at the ready, rejecting the U.S. State Department position that the group should disarm as part of the agreement. This is the same impasse that collapsed the 2024 ceasefire. Back then, Israel was supposed to withdraw and Hezbollah was supposed to disarm. Yeah, Neither happened. Both sides kept their leverage and the war eventually reignited. Nothing in the current structure prevents that cycle from repeating. Qassem's line was pointed: "We will not accept a repetition of 15 months of patience in the face of Israeli aggression while waiting for diplomacy that achieved nothing." The deeper challenge is that disarming Hezbollah has always been impossible in practice. The Lebanese government has no direct control over the group. Hezbollah is believed to be more militarily powerful than the country's army. And the U.S. insisting that only Lebanon's security forces can defend Lebanon ignores the basic reality that Hezbollah is Lebanon's most capable fighting force whether anyone likes it or not. 🇺🇸🇮🇱 Kamala says Netanyahu "pulled" Trump into the Iran war: "He entered a war, got pulled into it by Bibi Netanyahu, let us be clear about that. A war the American people do not want, putting at risk American service members." Kamala is saying publicly what Joe Kent, Tucker, Megyn Kelly, and now even Iran's Ghalibaf have all said independently: Netanyahu drove America into this war. The interesting question is whether this would have happened under a different president. Biden publicly chastised Netanyahu over Gaza and still couldn't stop the escalation cycle. The influence network doesn't change with administrations. It adapts. AIPAC funds both sides. The donor class has access to every Oval Office. And the intelligence pipeline from Tel Aviv to Washington flows regardless of who sits in the chair. Kamala is scoring political points now, but the honest answer is that any president would have faced the same pressure.

@OyederuOyewande @mrwtffacts I've met someone exonerated from Death Row. Ray Krone. Literally spent a decade waiting to die for a crime he had absolutely nothing to do with. DNA evidence set him free after bogus 'bite mark analysis' fraudulently linked him. He was the 100th exonerated by DNA.

In 2014, Texas, Ronald Lee Haskell disguised himself in a FedEx uniform and walked into his ex-wife's sister's home. Enraged by his divorce, he tied up his ex wife's sister, her husband & four kids (ages 4-13). He executed them all one by one. The couple’s fifth child, 15-year-old Cassidy Stay, was also shot in the head, but the bullet grazed her skull. She played dead in a pool of blood, too scared to even breathe. Ronald left to murder her grandparents next. Cassidy crawled to the phone with broken fingers while bleeding out. She calmly told 911: "He's heading to kill my grandparents right now!" Police halted Ronald on route. He was arrested and charged with 6 counts of capital murder. In 2019, he was sentenced to death.

🇱🇧 Beirut soon to be completely demilitarized? Was that on your 2026 bingo card? Beirut's politicians just did something that almost never happens: they agreed. 15 out of 19 MPs, across all parties, gathered at the Phoenicia Hotel this week, crossing political and religious lines, around a single demand: make Beirut a weapons-free city. The meeting built on an editorial MP Fouad Makhzoumi published in The Economist less than a month ago, laying out a 5-step plan to reclaim the capital, with a weapons-free Beirut as step one. Now that vision had a room full of backers. The core principle: all weapons exclusively in the hands of the state. That of course includes Hezbollah's arms. With a ceasefire now in place and the region looking for an off-ramp, there may never have been a more united moment for this conversation to actually go somewhere.

🇱🇧 Lebanon is waking up to a rare quiet as the ceasefire kicks in, bringing a mixture of relief and the reality of rebuilding. Teams are already scrambling to reopen the Qasmiyeh Bridge, a critical link between southern Lebanon and the rest of the country, after it was hit in Israeli strikes. But let’s be honest: Israel and Hezbollah don't have the best track record of sticking to ceasefires. The deal is set for 10 days… whether it lasts that long is the real question.

It is impossible to draw maps that: 1) Split the least number of counties 2) Split the least number of municipalities 2) Split the least number of precincts 3) Have the same number of *POPULATION*(not voters) 4) Have an even number of 2 political parties (when the largest in NC is literally UNAFILLIATED 5) Have all districts have the same ethnic makeup of the state (this would make every district White Majority, and is criticized as a gerrymander attempt called 'Packing') 6) Have a proportionate number of districts represent each ethnicity (impossible to draw, and criticized as a gerrymander attempt called 'Cracking') @ForwardCarolina I actually want to have a conversation on this. 1) Do we prioritize compactness and easy to understand representation from a map and existing precincts/municipalities/counties? 2) Political Representation (have each district represent a microcosm of the state) 3) Political Distribution (have the totality of the districts represent the political spectrum of a state) 4) Ethnic representation (have each district represent a microcosm of the state's diversity -impossible out here in the West with counties 95%+ White) 5) Ethnic Distribution (have the totality of the districts represent the ethnic diversity of the state- i.e X% of the state is White/black/hispanic/etc ergo X% of the state's districts should be white/black/hispanic/etc) It seems *IMPOSSIBLE* to do all of these. So what do you do? We also can no longer say honestly that X ethnicity will vote for Y political party. I think the reason people say the UNA votes are closet R or D is because a failure to consider the difficulty of ballot access forcing them to choose one or the other. #NCPOL @NCDemParty @NCGOP @JeffJacksonNC @JoshStein_ @chriscooperwcu

🇺🇸 The Supreme Court is weighing whether to gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, and this is what the congressional map could look like if it does. The VRA was passed in 1965 to stop states from drawing districts that dilute the voting power of minority communities. Section 2 is the provision that lets courts challenge those maps after the fact. If SCOTUS invalidates it, Southern states could redraw their maps freely. Republicans would pick up 12 seats across the South alone, going from 65 to 77, while Democrats would drop from 24 to 12. That's a structural shift in who controls Congress, potentially for decades. Source: New York Times
