Only reason it knows exactly where it is is because a guy one county over bolted a sensor to his roof and forgot about it.
That's distributed infrastructure. A guy, a roof, and a robot that works because of it.

Building infrastructure is hard.
Technology keeps making the engineering easier, but coordinating thousands of people to build the same thing at once? That's still a feat.
For decades, the only entities capable of pulling it off were governments and big companies, the ones big enough to raise billions and spend years installing everything themselves.
Distributed networks solve the coordination problem a different way. The rewards align incentives, so thousands of people buy, run, and maintain a piece of hardware, all adding up to one shared network.
