💎🔋 The Lithium Shield: Rescuing Zimbabwe’s Diamond Sales🇿🇼
Zimbabwe’s rough diamond sector faces a structural squeeze from synthetic competition and weak global prices. The strategic fix? Weaponizing its booming lithium windfall to gain absolute market leverage.
Here is the blueprint:
End "Fire Sales": Massive revenue from high-tech lithium refining gives the treasury a fiscal cushion, allowing Zimbabwe to hoard rough diamond stockpiles during market dips instead of selling at a discount.
Concession Bundling:
By tying lucrative critical-mineral concessions to gemstone trade, the state can mandate that global battery giants invest in local diamond cutting/polishing or guarantee premium purchasing floors.
Cross-Subsidized Infrastructure:
The multi-billion-dollar supply chains, secured zones, and engineering talent built by lithium capital directly lay the foundation to scale domestic diamond processing.
Funding the Pipeline:
Reallocating lithium windfalls into state-backed geological surveys ensures deep-earth diamond exploration stays funded, preparing a high-value pipeline for the market's recovery.
The Bottom Line:
Lithium gives Zimbabwe the financial stamina and industrial muscle to never negotiate its diamond wealth from a position of weakness. 📈

@zoomafrika1 Actually, it's between 50-55% with only about 65% in global diamond value.

@SheilaKhama @SheilaKhama that's interesting, if the ODC isn't obliged to sell to factories in Botswana how then do they allocate for the ' Citizens Only ' auction ? Isn't that mandatory for ODC or its at their discretion to or not supply the CO ?

How Should Botswana Respond to Angola’s Invitation to SADC Diamond Producers to Buy De Beers?
First What is the De Beers Group (DBSA)?
An extremely successful vertically intergraded diamond company with operations in exploration, mining, sorting, distribution, luxury diamond jewelry retail, synthetics, R&D centers. debeersgroup.com/our-business
A 137yrs old strong brand all be it associated with South Africa’s colonial and racial legacy.
On the question above, there is no silver bullet. But a few basics are clear.
Botswana’s leaders cannot afford the country’s vision for its most prized possession- diamonds and its partnership with De Beers to be externally driven. Nor can Botswana afford to undermine the value of De Beers a company it owns, strengthened through contribution to revenue and market leadership for years. With reserves second only to Russia, Botswana is a logical partner to any buyer of repute. The question therefore becomes, ‘who is worthy of Botswana’, and not ‘whom Botswana is worthy of?’
Top are SADC countries with a meaningful stake in the industry and like Botswana are in partnership with De Beers -(Namibia and Angola). A partner with knowledge of operations mid and downstream of the industry to grow demand based on robust distribution and marketing strategies necessary to revitalize the ailing industry is vital. Countries contribute the resource, but a commercial partner unlocks value. This report makes it abundantly clear that supply is not the problem. lnkd.in/dkFVcvtx
Should Botswana acquire a controlling share in De Beers?
Several factors suggest this is ill-advised. Firstly, the Government has a poor record of running companies and nothing suggests any change. Importantly, Botswana is unlikely to raise finance but if successful the financial risk is huge. Equally, a partner with industry expertise and their financier are unlikely to settle for a minority share. Partners that accept such terms would most likely have a short-term goal. With industry fundamentals changing, confidence and demand falling, Botswana could end up with stranded assets. After all, why Anglo is selling after a century? lnkd.in/dsdcWZSD
How should Botswana position itself?
A nominal increase of equity to avoid dilution.
Use its reputation to help stabilize the market.
Consider consolidating rather than expanding investments in diamonds, to eliminate concentration risk and resources duplication. Botswana is a shareholder in two diamond mining companies- (De Beers (15%) and Debswana (50%) and has direct and indirect shareholding in two rough diamond trading companies-(ODC. (100%) and DB Sightholders) Increasing investments and assuming only an upside is naive and exposes the country to financial risk from losses, periodic shareholder guarantees and loans. lnkd.in/dhxYJHut.
What of ODC?
ODC’s business model/commercial viability needs reassessing. ODC relies on De Beers IP, has no independent clientele and sells to De Beers clients while depending on Debswana and De Beers for marketing diamonds. Surprisingly, unlike De Beers, ODC is not obliged to supply factories in Botswana. What is the value-add?
