@mechanical_4u Anyone who has gone to a theater in the last 60 years knows this as scrim. It’s the backdrop that seems to become transparent when the stage is lit behind the curtain.

This is called negative space effect. Black paint makes chicken wire near invisible. Black absorbs all light, making the wire non-reflective. When painted, it blends into shadows and becomes nearly undetectable. The dark gaps between the wire start to dominate visually. Your eyes ignore the thin black lines. The negative space takes over. The wire is still there but your brain stops registering it. One simple principle. Perfect optical illusion..

🚨Harassment of Jews In Chicago by SJP DePaul🚨 Thursday, February 12, 2026 4:14 PM Subject: [EXTERNAL] Incident near DePaul University A deeply upsetting incident occurred yesterday at Olive & Oak, a coffee shop next to DePaul's campus. Hillel and JUF staff were running coffee hours for students to come by and chat, grab a cup of coffee, and spend time together. 12 Jewish students from DePaul, Loyola, and Roosevelt were there. The gathering was publicized on Hillel social media. Hillel staff and students had been enjoying Olive & Oak for weeks without incident. As the Jewish students started to arrive, other students wearing keffiyehs and sweatshirts with invectives like “globalize the intifada” began streaming in. They began talking loudly about antisemitic tropes related to Israel and allegations that Israel is committing war crimes. The disrupting students asked the cafe to start playing Palestinian music loudly and then started dancing while chanting “Free Palestine, Free Palestine.” The JUF staff member went outside to make a security call, and on her way back in one of the agitating students deliberately shoulder-checked her. Several of the anti-Jewish students were recognized to be members of DePaul's SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine). They asked the Olive & Oak staff, “Hey, so can we kick them out?” and continued shouting “Free Palestine” at the Jewish students while being cheered on by Olive & Oak staff. The Jewish students were understandably upset and got up to leave the cafe. As they were walking out, the aggressors and Olive & Oak’s staff and owner chanted “we won”, while filming and photographing the Jewish group walking out. Hillel students - especially those who experienced the encampments first-hand - were deeply disturbed, and Hillel staff sat with them afterward to process what happened. Said one student leader, “This is just one more place I’ve been excluded from since I started college. I can’t be in social clubs, I can’t be in Greek life, and now I can’t go to a local cafe simply because I’m Jewish.” The behavior of the SJP students and the Olive & Oak staff is completely unacceptable. Jews should be able to gather, chat, and build community without fear of harassment or intimidation.

@StreetsblogNYC Or, it’s a testament to the incompetence of the city to actually remove the snow and ice forcing vehicle owners to wait until a thaw. I’m all for permitted parking but making the assumption that they’re not bused because they’re inaccessible is not helping.

The aftermath of the storm has highlighted how infrequently some New Yorkers use their vehicles. Luckily for car-owners, one of the few things that comes free in New York City is a place to store your private automobile on public land.

A knife's performance is largely determined by material, heat treatment, and blade geometry. IMO, these sorts of products place novelty over traditional techniques honed over thousands of years. I think your $400 would go further at a shop like Korin in NYC

I’ve reported this bug to @Apple for about 4 years and it’s still happening. Hit one key and iOS types something entirely different. Their solution usually involves doing a factory reset which never fixes the issue. I can’t believe this lack of response for such a critical bug.
